Real Estate Agents and Brokers

The broker rarely has any direct dealings with the clients who are interested in buying or selling their houses and brokers focus more on the managerial side of the real estate business.

A broker is an independent but real estate agents have to work under the legal protection of the broker. Brokers once qualified can work for themselves or they can choose to work under the guidance of other brokers. Real estate agents can gain their experiences in the practical side of the business and then go on to take their brokerage qualifications too. This happens a lot when a successful agent chooses to become his own boss. This is why a career in real estate offers up a lot of potential for the right person and it really can become a well-paid career for life.

If the thought of ultimately becoming a broker appeals, understand that you would have to have a degree in real estate which is typically four years of studying and then would have to pass an exam at the end of it. Or you could have two years full experience in a real estate agents role plus a number of college level exams at a relevant school and following the completion of these, would finally have to take and pass the brokers exam. A third option is membership to the legal bar and then to take the brokers exam.

Real estate agents will directly liaise with the clients. If you enjoy the people aspect of the job then it?s a good idea to study as a real estate agent at least in the first instance and to gain all of the relevant experiences within a sales role before moving on to study as a broker. Brokers do earn more money but it?s worth noting that they take on much more legal responsibility too.

A career in real estate offers a great deal of variety. If you enjoy working as part of a team, it?s a good idea to apply for a job within a large real estate office and start off as the junior learning the ropes as you go. There are other ways to progress within real estate but it depends on your local area as to the opportunities. In real estate, you can learn the gift of selling, from cold calling, to telephone sales to objection handling and worst case scenario, complaint handling. There is a strong sense of achievement within this role which many agents find satisfying. Equally, having taking the necessary qualifications, you can set up on your own under the protection of a broker and eventually, if you decide a managerial role is more for you, take the necessary exams. Either way, if you want a challenging role that pays dividends, real estate can offer you the lot.
