Snowstorm hits Northeast, parts of Ohio

NEW YORK (AP) ? A widespread winter storm dumped snow over the Northeast and parts of Ohio on Saturday, just days after the regions were hit by another storm moving from the nation's midsection.

The National Weather Service expected up to a foot of snow in parts of southern New England, with the heaviest snowfall possibly in Providence, R.I., and Boston, which declared parking bans to allow snow removal vehicles to clean the streets. Winter storm warnings were in effect in parts of those states and in Connecticut.

New York City and Philadelphia saw a mix of rain and snow as the storm moved in from the west. In Ohio, Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati saw about 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

"Expect those accumulations to kind of work their way northeastward through much of New York state and much of New England," weather service meteorologist Brian Hurley said.

Drivers throughout the regions were warned to be cautious. Officials lowered the speed limit on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 300 miles from the Ohio state line to east-central Pennsylvania, from 65 mph to 45 mph.

About 20 vehicles piled up in a storm-related chain-reaction crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampton, N.H., police said, and five people were injured.

In Albany, N.Y., a regional jet skidded into a snow bank at the airport and became stuck, temporarily stranding passengers en route to Chicago. The 65 United Airlines passengers and crew members were put on a bus and sent back to the airport. There were no injuries, and the incident didn't cause any other flight delays, airport authority spokesman Doug Myers said.

Flights at Philadelphia's airport, mostly arrivals, were delayed about an hour, spokeswoman Stacy Jackson said.

Parts of southern Indiana saw 6 to 8 inches of snow from the storm, some in areas that had received more than a foot from a blizzard earlier in the week.

That blizzard was part of a storm system that dumped more than a foot of snow in some places and has been blamed for at least 16 deaths. It also spawned more than a dozen tornadoes in Alabama, the National Weather Service said.

But Saturday's snow wasn't as heavy as that of the previous storm, the weather service said.

96% Argo

All Critics (246) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (235) | Rotten (11)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

An edge-of-your-seat thriller not to be forgotten at Oscar time!

'Argo' only clocks in at a two-hour running time and tells a much better story than the films that over-stuffed audiences with nearly three-hours.

Second billing to unabashed jingoism

This may be the most geek-friendly movie that never did the rounds at Comic-Con.

When Tony (Ben Affleck) lands in Tehran and trains the frightened Americans to play their parts as a Canadian film crew, Argo compares the ruses run by governments and movie studios.

The whole thing is paced like a whip, and the third act may literally be the most suspenseful piece of film I've ever seen - and yes, I have seen Rear Window. Recommended without any reservation for every and any cinemagoer.

A terrific supporting cast, especially the non A-list actors, make the dramatic license taken justified and redeem Affleck for miscasting himself in the hero's role.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

Football finance probe derails Cottonwood High gravy train | The ...

(Tribune file photo) The sunsets over Cottonwood's football field in this photo from 2008.

Prep football ? School board?s new rules spur Cottonwood benefactor to cut off his support, hobbling the program.

Before the Philadelphia Eagles drafted him, Stanley Havili was a Salt Lake City kid with shaky prospects.

His first semester at East High, Havili earned only a 0.7 grade point average. Some of his friends joined gangs and went to jail. Others wound up dead.

But Havili realized his potential as a standout athlete at Cottonwood High, a school with a football program amped up by millions of dollars donated by benefactor Scott Cate. Havili went on to earn a scholarship to the University of Southern California before joining the NFL in 2011, an achievement he credits to Cate.

"I?m pretty sure I?d probably be working at the airport throwing bags on a plane if it wasn?t for him," said the 6-foot, 245-pound Havili, his voice breaking with emotion during a Granite District School Board meeting in July. "But now I have the opportunity to provide for my family doing something I love."

For more than a decade, hundreds of teenagers such as Havili benefited from Cate?s passion for football and his deep pockets before all that slammed to a sudden stop this summer amid questions about football-program finances at Cottonwood in Murray and other Utah high schools.

What started late last year as a probe into Timpview High School?s team grew into a statewide investigation. The review lifted the veil on sloppy financial practices within a number of Utah programs including Cottonwood?s, where Cate was allowed to donate more than $3 million with little documentation.

In an attempt to clean up Cottonwood?s finances, the Granite board passed a new donations policy that, among others things, prohibits big-time donors such as Cate from coaching. Insulted, Cate withdrew his support for the program.

"This is ridiculous. He helped the community," Havili?s father, Tevita Havili, told The Salt Lake Tribune. "If it weren?t for Scott, my kids wouldn?t have gotten this far."

But district leaders maintain the policy was long overdue and accept responsibility for years of financial haphazardness.

"This isn?t a recent problem," said district spokesman Ben Horsley. "It?s in relation to following our own policies ensuring state law is adhered to. ... These problems didn?t begin with some of the people we have in place now but they?re going to end with us."

story continues below

?

Poor documentation ? District documents show a number of issues during the past decade concerning the handling of donations. But the records ? obtained by The Tribune through an open records request ? are perhaps more notable for what they don?t show.

In October, Granite sent Cate and his wife a letter thanking them for their donations over the past 13 years. That letter listed $3.25 million worth of donations ? everything from football uniforms to a press box to a new football field. Cate, a former University of Utah quarterback, became wealthy building and selling an international telecommunications company. The last of his children graduated from Cottonwood about three years ago.

But that letter, in most cases, is where the district?s documentation of those donations ends.

The district doesn?t have records of everything Cate donated. Granite also was unable to fulfill a records request from The Tribune for emails between district personnel and Cate during the past decade.

GOP governors walk balance beam on health law

ATLANTA (AP) ? Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who made a fortune as a health care executive, long opposed President Barack Obama's remake of the health insurance market. After the Democratic president won re-election, the Republican governor softened his tone. He said he wanted to "have a conversation" with the administration about implementing the 2010 law. With a federal deadline approaching, he also said while Florida won't set up the exchange for individuals to buy private insurance policies, the feds can do it.

In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie held his cards before saying he won't set up his own exchange, but he's avoided absolute language and says he could change his mind. He's also leaving his options open to accept federal money to expand Medicaid insurance for people who aren't covered. The caveat, Christie says, is whether Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius can "answer my questions" about its operations and expense.

Both Republican governors face re-election in states that Obama won twice, Christie in 2013 and Scott in 2014. And both will encounter well-financed Democrats.

Their apparent struggles on the issue, along with other postures by their GOP colleagues elsewhere, suggest political uncertainty for Republicans as the Affordable Care Act starts to go into effect two years after clearing Congress without a single Republican vote. The risks also are acute for governors in Democratic-leaning or swing-voting states or who know their records will be parsed should they seek the presidency in 2016 or beyond.

"It's a tough call for many Republican governors who want to do the best thing for their state but don't want to be seen as advancing an overhaul that many Republicans continue to detest," said Whit Ayers, a consultant in Virginia whose clients include Gov. Bill Haslam of Tennessee, a Republican who didn't announce his rejection of a state exchange until days before Sebelius's Dec. 14 deadline.

Indeed, cracks keep growing in the near-unanimous Republican rejection of Obama's health care law that characterized the GOP's political messaging for the last two years. Five GOP-led states ? Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah ? are pressing ahead with state insurance exchanges. Ongoing monitoring by The Associated Press shows that another five Republican-led states are pursuing or seriously a partnership with Washington to help run the new markets.

Democrats, meanwhile, hope to use the law and Republican inflexibility to their advantage, betting that more Americans will embrace the law once it expands coverage. The calculus for voters, Democrats assume, will become more about the policy and less about a polarizing president.

"It shouldn't be complicated at all," said John Anzalone, an Obama pollster who assists Democrats in federal races across the country. Anzalone said Republicans could use their own states-rights argument to justify running exchanges. Instead, he said, "They are blinded by Obama-hatred rather than seeing what's good for their citizens."

Governors can set up their own exchanges, partner with Sebelius' agency or let the federal government do it. The exchanges are set to open Jan. 1, 2014, allowing individuals and businesses to shop online for individual policies from private insurers. Low- and middle-income individuals will get federal premium subsidies calculated on a sliding income scale. Nineteen states plus Washington, DC, most led by Democrats, have committed to opening their own exchanges.

The law also calls for raising the income threshold for Medicaid eligibility to cover people making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty line, or about $15,400 a year for an individual. That could add more than 10 million people, most of them childless adults, to the joint state-federal insurance program for low-income and disabled Americans. Together, the exchanges and the Medicaid expansion are expected to reduce the number of uninsured by about 30 million people within the next decade.

A Supreme Court ruling last summer made the Medicaid expansion voluntary, rather than mandatory for states. At least eight governors, all of them Republicans, have already said they have no plans to expand Medicaid.

The complexity is obvious.

National exit polls from last month's election showed that 49 percent of voters wanted some or all of Obama's signature legislative achievement rolled back. Among self-identified independents, that number was 58 percent. Among Republicans, it spiked to 81 percent. When asked about the role of government, half of respondents said the notion that government is doing too much fits their views more closely than the idea that government should do more.

Before the election, a national AP-GfK poll suggested that 63 percent of respondents preferred their states to run insurance exchanges, almost double the 32 percent who wanted the federal government to take that role. And the same electorate that tilts toward repealing some or all of the new law clearly re-elected its champion.

That's not the most important consideration for governors who face re-election in Republican states. Georgia's Nathan Deal and Alabama's Robert Bentley, who also face 2014 campaigns, initially set up advisory commissions to consider how to carry out the health care law, but they've since jumped ship. But, unlike others, Deal and Bentley aren't eyeing national office.

Three Republicans who are viewed as potential national candidates ? Rick Perry of Texas, Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana ? were full-throated opponents. Jindal, the only one of the three who is term-limited, is the incoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association. In that role, he has co-signed more conciliatory letters to Sebelius asking questions to flesh out how the designs might work.

Republican governors also are feeling quiet pressure from hospitals and other providers.

Deal, the Georgia governor, offers the typical argument for saying no. "We can't afford it." But the law envisions the new Medicaid coverage more or less as a replacement of an existing financing situation that pays hospitals to treat the uninsured. The law contemplates cuts in that program, which already requires state seed money. The idea was that expanding Medicaid coverage would reduce "uncompensated care" costs.

"Some of those cuts were made with the expectation that Medicaid would be expanded and that hospitals would be paid for portions of business that we are not being paid for now," said Don Dalton of the North Carolina Hospital Association.

Dalton's Governor-elect, Republican Pat McCrory, said as a candidate that he opposed Medicaid expansion. Dalton said his industry is leaning on McCrory and legislative leaders, though he commended "their deliberate approach." Similar efforts are underway in South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri and elsewhere.

For Democrats, Anzalone said the framing will be simpler: "You don't want to take a 9-to-1 match? That's a pretty easy investment. These governors who aren't expanding Medicaid, they're basically giving taxpayer money to the states that do."

Sheriff believes New Mexico slayings tied to cartels

ESPANOLA, N.M. -- The Rio Arriba County sheriff says he thinks the recent execution-style slayings of two men and the case of two other men found dead in a burned-out trailer are linked to Mexican drug cartels.

Sheriff Tommy Rodella said one of two men found dead Dec. 21 in the burned trailer in Medanales was a suspect in the double murder 11 days earlier in Hernandez.

Rodella said the slayings have the earmarks of a Mexican cartel hit.

"There was drugs involved," he said. "And I think because of the level of drug dealing that has been going on now for some time, I think that is indicative that the (cartels) are here. The thing is that this isn't the first case where someone has been murdered and burned. That sends a hell of a message."

Rodella said Tomas J. Sanchez, 20, was one of two people found dead in the burned trailer. Rodella said Sanchez was the top suspect in the Dec. 10 deaths of Matthew Maestas, 53, and Joseph Eugene Valdez, 47, each of whom had been shot five times before the trailer was set on fire.

Reasons Why Our Society Is Underdeveloped - Politics - Nairaland

Reasons Why Our Society Is Underdeveloped by ifebosco: 11:21am On Dec 29THE society is a reflection of the aggregate of values and priorities of its members. There are few things around us, both good and bad, that did not originate as a ?thought? in the mind of an individual or group of individuals. Consequently, if some societies are ordered and relatively more qualitative while others are in disarray, this is a direct result of the (in)actions of the inhabitants of these societies.
If you are an African, ask yourself these simple questions, and the reason for the dire circumstance of the mother continent will come home to you. Have you ever,

1. Entered a packed banking hall and instead of joining the queue, sought out the ?sister of your friend?s cousin? who happens to work somewhere in the building, in order to circumvent the queue and in the process increase the misery of those doing it the right way by prolonging their waiting times
2. Driven against the flow of traffic simply because it looks expedient at the time
3. Given money to the ubiquitous civil servant to ensure that your document gets signed on the same day, when the standard procedure is to wait for two weeks
4. Induced a police officer to look the other way because your car papers are not in order and you are too sloppy to attend to it
5. Manipulated the system to obtain admission for your ward, knowing full well that s/he did not merit such consideration, and in so doing deprive a better qualified candidate the opportunity
6. Known a friend/family member living ostensibly above their means and legitimate income and rather than question the anomaly, asked for your share of the unexplained windfall
7. Voted for someone simply because s/he is from your geographical region, religion, speaks the same language and other such spurious reasons, rather than the merit and fitness of the person
8. Heaped curses and abuses on your Local Government Chairperson, governor and president, and on that single occasion you had audience with the , became a wimp and instead spewed false adulations on him, calling him ?the best thing since sliced bread....?
9. Evaded tax and duties, and then went ahead to bribe the Revenue Officer to issue you a fraudulent Tax Clearance Certificate
10. Obtained a drivers licence without actually being to a testing ground and passing the prescribed practice test
11. Paid less to clear your goods at the port
12. When caught-out one way or the other, is your disposition to take full responsibility for your actions or to immediately start thinking/looking for who can/will bail you out/shield you from the natural consequence of your actions
13. Turned-up late for work and blamed a non-existent traffic congestion
14. Are you the ultimate custodian of the ?African Time?, always late for appointments
15. Do you live only to enjoy the titillations of your five senses, no matter the negative effect of your ?enjoyment? on others and society
16. Are you an academic but have not contributed anything to the body-stock of knowledge; your specialization is indolence and college politics
17. Taken money to vote in a particular way instead of voting your conscience
18. Covered the truth, thwarted the truth or hinder the arbiter of the truth for your own selfish/sinister motives
19. Held others to a higher ?code of conduct? than you demand of yourself
20. Taken money or other valuables under false pretences and justified it on the grounds of ?this is the way it is done here...?
21. Having done the above, did you then enter the church/mosque or other religious congregation and gave testimonies of ?God?s (or Allah?s) goodness?
22. Are you an integral part of your society?s problem and you do not even realise it
If ever, you answered ?yes? to many of the preceding posers, you have no ground to stand on and criticize your representatives; they after all represent what you stand for, your modus operandi, your values and your reward systems. The (wo)man to criticize and change is the one looking back at you in the mirror

Couldn't agree with you more.

The day I read people condemning and practically crowing at the plight of an 11 yrs old girl Molested by 5 guys all because of her tribe and what her momma did for a living was the day I kinda gave up hope.

The people who govern the country are a reflection of a large percentage of the people they govern. So why do we expect it to be anything but shitty? huh

This thread wont go far because it contains HARD truth and requires self examination instead of the usual insults of our "leaders" I have always argued that we are a contributors to the corruption around us. Lets ALL agree on that then we can move fwd. We are one of the most hypocritical nation. When someone does something, its "tribalism" "wickedness" etc, when I do it its "sharpness" "smartness". NO society can develop where people are allergic to truth and we wear lies like face cap.

With all due respect sir this argument is so old and tired, not even marx, engels and lenin can present it with a straight face. The issues raised are simple issues within each ones power. Its high time we stop this "blame the west" knee jerk reaction. Other countries with the same colonial experience have moved forward so that crutch is no longer available.

Bullsh1t!! straight up bullsh1t. I didn't wanna make a comment but this argument drives me nuts. I think the op should include the attitude of blaming others instead of taking responsibilities for our actions. We always wanna take the easy way out which is to blame others for our failures. Do you know I went to renew my drivers license and they made it practically impossible for me to get it the right way even when I was determined to, it was so frustrating. After long I just called up an officer and gave their runs ammount which was even far lesser than if I have done it the legal way and in two days time I had a new license bearing Ogun state even though I did it in abuja. My point : The system has almost made it impossible for you to do things the right way. If NIGERIA CAN'T FIGHt CORRUPTION, THEY SHOULD JUST LEGALISE IT lol

NYC homicides, shootings at modern record lows

Seth Wenig / AP

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, left, and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly speak to reporters after a Police Academy graduation ceremony Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, in New York.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Homicides and shootings in New York are at their lowest in a half-century, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday.

Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly credited stepped-up policing for the 19.6 percent drop in homicides (from 515 last year to 414 through Friday) and the 15.9 percent decline in overall shootings (from 1,608 last year to 1,353).

That's the fewest homicides since the city started keeping such statistics in 1963, and it's dramatically lower than the record high of 2,245 set in 1990.

The most recent FBI figures show that homicides have been falling in most major cities in recent years, but the drop in New York far outpaces the national average decline of 4 percent from 2010 to 2011, the last full year for which federal figures are available.

Kelly said officers had taken 8,000 weapons "out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal handguns," while Bloomberg singled out the city's participation in Operation Impact, a 2003 state initiative that pairs new police recruits with veteran officers in specific high-crime areas, as a particular success.

"The fact that the safest big city in America is safer than ever is a testament to the hard work and determination of the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day ? and it also reflects our commitment to doing everything possible to stop gun violence," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

Neither man specifically mentioned the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which allows officers to search someone as he or she leaves a private building if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is likely to commit a crime.

The policy is under legal challenge from civil liberties groups, which contend that police use it as a pretext to stop and search anyone without cause and contend in court documents that three-quarters of all New Yorkers searched under it are African-American or Latino. A trial is set for March.

What Motherhood Taught Me About My Personality | BlogHer

You know, you go through your life (in this case about 29 years so far) thinking that you?ve pretty much got yourself figured out. You come to terms with some things (like the fact that you can?t sleep with socks on no matter how cold your feet are or that you can?t say no to a brownie, regardless of what you just ate) and you take pride in others (like your natural ability to organize a party with absolutely no decorations, notice, or real planning and still have a wonderful time).

And then, bam, motherhood hits you. And all the things that you knew about yourself?or at least you thought you knew about yourself?go right out the window. Let?s explore what I?ve learned about myself in these last 2 years, shall we?

I am a planner. I?m not joking when I say that I did not know this about myself. I have always taken pride in my ability to fly by the seat of my pants (another English expression I do not understand, but that doesn?t stop me from using it on a daily basis) and considered myself a go-with-the-flow kind of person. I didn?t make specific plans for the weekend, packed up the car and took off to another state with about five minutes notice, and couldn?t tell you my agenda for the week unless you meant my work schedule hours. When I married Jon, the steadiest, most routine person I know, things started to adjust slightly. We both rubbed off on a each other and molded into a couple that had some plans, but were still relatively spontaneous.

And then Peanut came along (and by came along, I mean we planned out a pregnancy with an exact timeline). You know what I learned about myself from having a baby? That I need schedules and structure and dependability. Being a type-A personality, I realized that I couldn?t control much about this new little addition to our lives so I turned to what I could control -- the scheduling. I scheduled naps, feedings, bedtimes. I planned out our weekends, making sure all family members got time with the little Peanut. I wrote out lists for cleaning schedules in our house.

If the 22-year old me could look at the 29-year old me, I don?t think I?d recognize myself. But you know what? It works for me and for my family. It gives us control in certain situations and frees us to be easy-going (as long as our schedules allow for that, hehe). And most importantly, it works wonders for Peanut, who craves stability.

Along the same lines, I?m also apparently a very strict parent. Don?t get me wrong, I love to have fun, jump on beds, and run around the back yard. But there are some things in our household that are set rules and I don?t back down. Looking back, I guess I could have guessed this one about myself since I?ve always been rather stubborn.

We eat when we eat, we play when we play, we stay within eye sight (ok, this applied to the toddler only) when we?re out in public, and we don?t throw any crying fits. We don?t hit people or pets, we don?t pull the dog?s hair, we don?t throw food on the floor, and when we go to bed, we go to sleep. For now, there aren?t many other rules in our household and everything in between is fair game. When someone (*cough* Peanut *cough*) tries to break said rules, our motto is to ignore things we don?t want repeated or the address the serious things like biting or hitting. The thing that surprised me the most is that I?m able to stand my ground without giving in without much effort. One could say it comes natural to me (this is where being stubborn apparently pays off). And I think that Peanut likes the stability that goes along with set rules; she?s been pretty good about calming down from crying or not starting to cry in the first place from small disappointments (like no TV if mom said no TV) and we?re working through other things (like no throwing food on the ground, even if it is hilarious that Travis will try to fly through the air to catch it).

Another revelation about myself that I?ve had since becoming a parent is that I love sleep. I don?t know if this is an age thing or a parent thing, but omg, do

Remotely Fetch Files from Your PC with SkyDrive (When It Isn't on Your SkyDrive)

Remotely Fetch Files from Your PC with SkyDrive (When It Isn't on Your SkyDrive)Windows: Like other online storage and syncing tools, SkyDrive is great for convenient access to the files you have in its sync folder(s). But it also has a killer feature: The ability to grab a file from a remote computer even if it hasn't been synced or is stored outside of the sync folder.

SkyDrive's Fetch feature is responsible for this awesome capability that can save you in a pinch when you've forgotten a file. 7Tutorials has a step-by-step guide to using SkyDrive's Fetch feature, but basically, you only need a few things: Enable Fetch in the SkyDrive desktop app (if you didn't do so already during the initial set up, it's under the app's settings menu) and make sure the computer you want to connect to is on and connected to the internet. Note that you can only fetch files that are on a Windows machine, but you can use a Mac to upload them to SkyDrive.

Then, log in to SkyDrive on the web from any computer and click on the name of the remote computer. You'll have to enter a security code Microsoft will email or text you for extra security, then you can browse the computer's files, right click the one you want, and upload it to SkyDrive.

For more screenshots and details, you can check out 7Tutorial's instructions or Microsoft's Fetch page .

How Can Your Business Succeed Online In 2013? - Web Design ...

Every business, however small or large, wants to succeed online. As the 2013 starts, how to increase profits and succeed online is at the top of most business? agenda.

Whether you?re just starting a new business or taking your existing business to the next level, the following tips will guarantee your success in the coming year.

1. Enhance Your Website

A great website can be a very important asset for any business. Whether you are an e-commerce business or a traditional bricks and mortar company, how well you are able to leverage your website to acquire new customers will play an important role in the success of your business in 2013. This is the year to take a fresh look at your website and explore ways to drive leads and boost sales.

A good quality website does not have to cost thousands. Rather than spending a fortune to get a website with all the bells and whistles, it may be more profitable to use an affordable website and use your resources to integrate the right features, create valuable resources and expand your online profile.

Here Are Some Tips:

  • Use a clean-cut, clutter-free website layout
  • Offer interactive features that promotes user-engagement
  • Make good use of lead-capture forms and landing pages
  • Use effective call to action

2. Expand Your Social Media Presence

Social media marketing has become an essential ingredient of any successful Internet marketing strategy today. Most businesses already maintain profiles on the leading social networks. 2013 is the year to expand your social presence and take it a step further. Think beyond a basic social presence and put an effort to take your social media marketing to the next level.

Here are some tips:

  • Use multiple social channels to expand your reach
  • If you haven?t already, start building your presence on Pinterest and Google Plus
  • Improve your posting strategy: Post more often and schedule your posts
  • Take advantage of social media automation
  • Consider social advertising such as Facebook ads, Promoted Tweets, etc
  • Use social media to reinforce your brand.
  • Use consistent branding across social profiles
  • Share quality content from several sources, not just your own site
  • Engage actively with users ?- open-ended posts, polls, engaging campaigns, run contents and promotions, reply to comments, retweet, like or share other users content.
  • Try social commerce e.g. selling products on your Facebook Page

3. Make Your Website Mobile Enabled

PWC have estimated that mobile internet use will surpass desktop use within the next 3 years. Yet, only a quarter of businesses have a mobile enabled website. It is important to make sure your website offers a seamless experience whether it is accessed from desktop or a mobile phone.

If you want your business to capitalise on the mobile marketing trend, at the least you should make your website mobile enabled.

Succeed in 2013 - Responsive Website

How to Make Sure Your Website is Mobile-Enabled?

Creating a mobile website is not as difficult as you might think. The approach depends on whether you already have a website for? your business or you are starting from scratch.

If You Don?t Have A Website:

If you are creating a new website then I highly recommend creating a responsive website. Responsive web-design is a new approach for creating websites where CSS techniques are used to scale the site automatically to fit the screen resolution of the user. This ensures users can access your website seamlessly from a desktop, tablet or smart phone. It also means there is no need for your business to create and maintain separate versions of your website for each device.

If You Have a Website That is Not Mobile-Optimised:

If you already have a website, the chances are the design is not responsive. In such cases, creating a separate mobile version of your existing website is a more suitable option. There are several web-based services you can use to create a mobile version of your site.

4. Change Focus from Direct Marketing to Inbound Marketing

Inbound marketing is the new way of marketing that is much more productive and efficient than traditional direct marketing methods. Inbound marketing is a highly targeted marketing approach that involves acquiring customers by creating exceptional content and information.

It typically involves creating quality content to attract prospects towards your website and then using leveraging website to convert them into leads for your business. It is far more efficient than traditional marketing methods like billboard advertising or even direct mail.

Business Success 2013 - Inbound Marketing

Inbound marketing is also more cost-effective and cheaper than traditional marketing methods. Studies have found that businesses that use inbound methods have a 62% lower cost-per-lead than companies that focus on outbound tactics. (Source: Hubspot).

The 3 main stages of inbound marketing:

  • Get Found (Via methods such as content creation, SEO, Internet marketing, Social Media)
  • Convert? (Via methods such as landing pages, lead capture forms, call to action)
  • Measure and Refine (By monitoring your stats closely and taking action where needed)

5.? Invest in Content Creation

Content marketing, the process of creating and distributing content,? is at the heart of inbound marketing. Publishing content is one of the most effective ways to attract customers and drive traffic to your website. Although it takes time and effort to create quality content, the benefits are well worth the effort.

Businesses that time and resources to implement an ongoing content marketing plan have a much better chance of succeeding in 2013. Having a publishing schedule can be a great help and ensures a consistent approach.

Business Success 2013 - Content Marketing

Types of Content You Can Create:

Following are some types of content that you can create as part of your marketing efforts:

  • Publish blog posts frequently
  • Publish articles on topics relevant to your niche
  • Produce White Papers and Reports
  • Create EBooks
  • Publish Documents and Presentations
  • Create EZines
  • Start a Newsletter
  • Offer Webinars, Tutorials and Email Series

6. Explore Mobile Advertising

Businesses that wish to capitalize on the mobile marketing trend and succeed online in 2013 will need to do much more than simply making sure their website is accessible on smart-phones.

Businesses that prioritise mobile marketing and try out new ways to target this ever-increasing consumer-base are much more likely to succeed online in the coming year.

There are many mobile advertising options that businesses can take advantage of. Here are some of them:

a) Mobile Paid Search Ads:

Mobile Search Ads is an easy way to get your site listed above other sites on search engines. Most search engines including Google, Bing and Yahoo offer paid search ads that specifically targets mobile customers.

Succeed Onine - Mobile Search Ads

b) Mobile Advertising Networks:

Mobile advertising networks make it easy for businesses to run and manage mobile ad campaigns on several sites, apps and other channels from a single place. There are many self-service as well as managed mobile advertising networks that your businesses can take advantage of.

How to Succeed - Use Mobile Ads

c) Location Based Services:

The last couple of years have seen an increase in the popularity of location-based services. Sites like Foursquare and Yelp offer a great way to offer deals to customers based on their location as well as to reward loyal customers.

Location Based Marketing

Conclusion:

2013 is a great year to leverage Internet marketing to grow your business and increase your profits. Whether you are starting a new business or are looking for ways to expand your existing online business, the tips above can help you take your online business to the next level.

What if Winter Storms Render Destinations Uninhabitable | Travel ...

With the recent winter storm bringing record snowfall in some areas of the country, a little known travel insurance benefit may help some travelers recover costs from cancelling expensive vacations. When a destination is made uninhabitable due to natural disaster, travelers may have the option to receive reimbursement for cancelling a trip.

What travelers may not realize is that aside from being applicable when hurricanes, floods and tornadoes hit, this benefit can also apply to blizzards. There are several factors that can qualify travelers for coverage under this benefit. While some are more extreme, like structural damage or elemental intrusion, others are not. For example, if a traveler?s destination is without electricity or water, they may be able to cancel their trip and receive reimbursement under this benefit.

Travelers may forget that there are several covered reasons under standard trip cancellation that may apply to specific situations, like the recent string of winter storms that passed through the middle and northeastern states. By reviewing terms of coverage before departing, travelers will be fully aware of the benefits available to them and how they can be applied when weather or disaster strikes.
