Greek doctors, public transport workers on strike

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Public transport workers in the Greek capital walked off the job Thursday in a 24-hour strike, snarling traffic around Athens, while a doctors' strike has left hospitals functioning with emergency staff.

Athens was without buses, suburban rail and trolleys, while dock workers began a 48-hour strike that was to leave islands without ferries for two days. Hospital doctors and ambulance workers were also on strike for the day.

The civil servants' union has declared a three-hour work stoppage at all public services from noon in solidarity, which was expected to shut down post offices, tax offices and other services.

Greece has been gripped by a severe financial crisis since late 2009 and is being kept afloat by billions of euros in rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund. In return, the government has imposed waves of spending cuts and tax hikes, leading to severe salary and pension cuts and leaving unemployment spiraling to above 26 percent.

Workers have been protesting planned reforms to the pension and income contribution system , part of the latest spending cuts in the bailout program. Other measures that took effect this year include a 25 percent cut to the incomes of most public servants, leading to a string of new strikes and protests.

On Wednesday, protesters from a communist-backed union forced their way into the Labor Ministry, leading to the arrest of about 35 protesters and clashes with riot police who tried to repel a crowd of about 200 outside the building.

The arrested unionists were appearing in court Thursday on charges of causing damage inside the ministry, charges which they deny. A crowd of supporters gathered outside the courthouse during their hearing.

Astrobites: Students Making Astrophysics Accessible

Logo of AstrobitesUnderstanding science is hard. ?This is true even for well educated and highly motivated readers, like college students earning science degrees. ?These students may have all the technical knowledge they need to absorb and even reproduce cutting-edge research in their field, but I can tell you from experience that when an undergraduate picks up a peer-reviewed journal paper for the first time, they might as well be reading in another language.

For scientists, graduate school is like the immersion method for teaching the foreign language of science. ?At the end, students come our fully versed in the historical context, methodology, and jargon needed to parse journal articles. ?Until then, as I described in my previous post on this blog, we can ?translate? scientific writing for young scientists to help them reach their full capability as researchers sooner.

Two years ago, in my first year as a graduate student in astronomy at Harvard and having made it much of the way across this language barrier, several of my classmates and I banded together to help others cross with us. ?We founded a website called Astrobites, where each day we take one new research paper in astrophysics and translate it in the way I?ve described.

Our translations are short and sweet?they provide visitors the context for the work, the methods the authors used, and the key results in about five minutes of reading. ?And they?re no longer written by just a few of us at Harvard, but by a collaboration of more than three dozen graduate students around the world.

At Astrobites, we don?t write in exactly the same way as most science writers do. We cheat a little?and we do it to make things easier on our target audience. ?We assume a readership with about a first-year undergraduate level of scientific knowledge. ?We take for granted that our readers are familiar with technical concepts like blackbody radiation and Kepler?s laws, which may take hundreds of words to elucidate in publications for mainstream audiences. ?Our readers benefit from seeing terminology like these in use, by saving a few minutes of unnecessary reading and by immersion in the concepts.

But while Astrobites articles are aimed at undergraduate students, we?ve been delighted to find that readers with vastly different levels of training visit our site as well. ?Our readership has as many professors, graduate students, and non-scientists as it does undergraduates.

?

Astrobites' homepage

Homepage of Astrobites

We want to see this model of translation spread to other fields, and we?re happy to help other graduate students found ?-bites? sites in their fields of research. ?Chemistry graduate students at MIT have already founded Chembites. ?If you would like to apply this model to your own field, we would love to help?please contact us!

We?re all volunteering our time as Astrobites authors, but we get important pedagogical, writing, and editing experience in return. ?I think that practice interpreting research and explaining it clearly to others is invaluable for scientists in training. ?It?s also what science writers do professionally, and I?m eager to see the bonds between these two communities strengthened. ?If you?re of the same mind, I invite you to read more about the Communicating Science workshop we?re organizing, to be held in June.

The Note's Must-Reads for Tuesday, January 29, 2013

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Jayce Henderson, Amanda VanAllen and Jordan Mazza

IMMIGRATION: ABC News' Ted Hesson: " 3 Flashpoints in the New Senate Immigration Reform Blueprint" A bipartisan group of senators unveiled a framework for immigration reform today, balancing out pro-immigrant reforms like a path to citizenship for the undocumented with provisions for increased immigration enforcement on the border and in the workplace. LINK

The Hill's Alexander Bolton: " Landscape shifts on immigration" A bipartisan group of senators on Monday said the political landscape for immigration reform has changed, boosting their hopes for passing a bill. Recent elections have changed his party's view on immigration, said Sen. John McCain, a Republican from Arizona who led an unsuccessful push to reform the nation's immigration laws in 2006 and 2007. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Michael Memoli, Noam Levey, and Brian Bennett: " Senators unveil bipartisan immigration plan, but opposition looms" As they announced their framework for comprehensive immigration reform, leading senators from both parties declared Monday that the politics of the long-stalled debate had shifted after Republican candidates failed to win significant support from the growing Latino electorate in November. But many conservatives made clear they rejected that contention. They remain deeply skeptical of any plan that would create a way for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country to become citizens. LINK

The Washington Times' Stephen Dinan: " Immigration plan mirrors 2007's" Powered by the results of the November elections, a bipartisan group of top senators on Monday floated the latest proposal to overhaul the nation's shattered immigration system - but acknowledged they are at the earliest stages of what is a fragile balancing act. Led by Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, and Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, the eight lawmakers said they want to give all illegal immigrants instant legal status, to expand pathways for legal immigration and to enact more border security. LINK

USA TODAY's Susan Davis and Martha T. Moore: " Immigration plan could be long-term boon to GOP" A renewed bipartisan push to rewrite U.S. immigration laws presents Republicans with their clearest opportunity to make up lost ground with one of the fastest growing forces in American politics. LINK

The Washington Post's David Nakamura and Rosalind S. Helderman: "Obama to announce his immigration reform plan, said to be more liberal than Senate effort" The Obama administration has developed its own proposals for immigration reform that are more liberal than a separate bipartisan effort in the Senate, including a quicker path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, people with knowledge of the proposals said. President Obama is expected to provide some details of the White House plans during a Tuesday appearance in Las Vegas, where he will call for broad changes to the nation's immigration laws. LINK

The Boston Globe's Maria Sacceheti: " Obama, senators prepare immigration plans" As President Obama unveils his latest plan to overhaul the nation's beleaguered immigration system Tuesday, advocates for immigrants in Massachusetts and nationwide are mobilizing to seize what they say is their best chance in almost three decades to secure a path to US citizenship for more than 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States. LINK

Politico's Manu Raju: " Schumer, McCain: immigration's odd couple" A few days after Republicans took an electoral beating from Hispanic voters, Sen. Lindsey Graham made a phone call to Sen. Chuck Schumer. The South Carolina Republican wanted to restart the stalled talks with Schumer on immigration from a couple years back. But this time, he noted, his closest Senate friend was ready to reengage in the emotionally charged issue: John McCain. LINK

GOP: The New York Times' Michael D. Shear: " Bipartisan Plan Faces Resistance in G.O.P." At Tommy's Country Ham House, a popular spot downtown for politics and comfort food, not much has changed since 2007, the last time conservatives here made it crystal clear to politicians how they felt about what they see as amnesty for people who entered the country illegally. "What we need to do is put them on a bus," said Ken Sowell, 63, a lawyer from Greenville, as he ate lunch recently at the diner. LINK

SANDY RELIEF: The Wall Street Journal's Andy Grossman: " Senate Approves Bill on Sandy Aid" A $50.5 billion aid package to help Northeastern states rebuild after superstorm Sandy won Senate approval Monday evening, clearing the last major congressional hurdle before heading to the president, who said he would sign it. Nexus 4 smartphones back on Google Play in Germany, get 'em while they're hot

If the Nexus 4's recent scarcity has been making you want it even more, there's good news: it's now back on Google Play shelves. After a lengthy shortage resulted in a minor finger-pointing episode between Mountain View and manufacturer LG, the pair have starting restocking the popular quad-core, Android 4.2-pure device, on Play, well ahead of LG's February estimate. So far, it's only popped up in Germany, and there's no word yet on when they'll arrive elsewhere. Given the pent-up demand, however, you may want to grab one when it does.

Looking Old May Signal Heart Trouble

Have you seen the Internet ads for the 53-year-old mom who looks 27? Not only does she look better than people who actually show their age, a new Danish study has found there's a good chance she'll live longer, too.

The older you look, the worse shape your heart is in, the authors of the ongoing Copenhagen Heart Study concluded.

The study, which began in 1976, followed 11,000 men and women for 35 years to find the connection between physical appearance and heart health.

Originally, the investigators paid attention to seven telltale signs of aging. They eventually found that wrinkles, gray hair and cholesterol deposits on the cornea of the eye were all part of the inevitable wear and tear on the body rather than predictors of bad health.

"These are signs of physical aging, not necessarily biological aging," said the study's lead investigator, Dr. Anne Tybaerg-Hansen.

That left four physical traits - a receding hairline, baldness on top of the head, earlobe creases and yellow, fatty deposits around the eyelid - as visible evidence of heart disease. People with at least three of these markers for aging had a 57 percent increased risk for heart attack and a 39 percent increased risk for heart disease.

When the researchers considered gender separately, they found that hair loss in women was not linked with an increased risk of heart disease. However, the men with receding hairlines showed a 40 percent higher risk in men with hair loss than those without.

Overall, the group for whom the new results raises a red flag was men between ages 70 and 79. In this group, 45 percent of those with all four aging signs developed heart disease, compared to 31 percent of those with none of the four.

The markers used in the study are often cited as predictors of heart disease. Scientists have long speculated that male-pattern baldness may be linked to high levels of testosterone, which, in turn, seem to be associated with a higher incidence of heart disease.

Experts have suspected for decades that earlobe creases and cholesterol buildup on the eye are signs of heart trouble.

Wrinkles, which weren't associated with heart health in the study, have been tied to poor bone health. Last year, a Yale study found women with deeply furrowed brows in early menopause may also have weak bones.

Tabaerg-Hansen said her research gave no clear answers as to why the four physical traits were so closely associated with the risk of heart disease. The next step would be to try to find out why they're connected and to see if they might also predict other diseases of aging, such as cancer.

Tabaerg-Hansen added that there's no reason physicians can't look out for these signs right now as they assess which of their patients are in poor cardiovascular health.

"This new study should give clinicians greater incentive to treat patients who show these physical signs," she said. "They could suggest lifestyle changes and therapies for those who have the appearance of higher risk."

The study results were presented at this week's American Heart Association scientific meeting in Los Angeles. They have not yet been published.

Clinton says she doesn't see "getting back into politics"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday cast doubt on speculation she might run for the White House in 2016.

In an interview taped for National Public Radio, Clinton was asked what questions she needs to answer for herself as she decides whether to run for president.

"I'm not even posing those questions. I am really looking forward to stepping off the fast track that I've been on. I've been out of politics as Secretary of State. I don't see myself getting back into politics," she said, according to an excerpt of the interview.

Whether this is her last word on the subject is unknown. She will face strong pressure from Democrats to join the field of contenders. Clinton will step down this week, following Senate confirmation Tuesday of Massachusetts Democratic Senator John Kerry as her successor.

Those close to Clinton are eager for her to announce a 2016 run, so much so that a group has already formed a new super PAC and registered with the Federal Election Commission on Friday, called "Ready for Hillary."

In 2008, she lost to President Barack Obama in a bitter Democratic primary campaign to be the party nominee for the White House.

Although Clinton, 65, did not categorically rule out another presidential run, in a separate NBC interview she said that she was healthy enough to wage a campaign.

"I have no doubt that I am healthy enough and my stamina is great enough and I'll be fully recovered to do whatever I choose to do," Clinton told "Andrea Mitchell Reports" in an interview that aired on Tuesday.

Clinton was hospitalized in December after doctors found a blood clot stemming from a concussion she suffered previously.

She intends to do more public speaking and writing, and work alongside her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and daughter Chelsea on "mutual foundation interests," she said in the NPR interview.

"I want to be involved in philanthropy, advocacy, working on issues - like women and girls - that I care deeply about," Clinton said.

PlayHaven Grabs Google Admob?s Mobile Cowboy Yim As COO

PlayHaven, the gaming service provider that helps studios monetize their players better, just grabbed Google Admob?s Charles Yim as COO.

He?ll oversee the company?s international expansion, developer relations and business development. He had a similar role at Google where he managed the ad network?s key relationships with the biggest game developers like Rovio. He joined AdMob on the business development team before the company was acquired for $750 million by Google in 2010. (?Mobile cowboy? is a nickname he got at SXSW a few years ago for wearing cowboy hats and boots all the time.)

PlayHaven is a company that?s had nine lives, I mean, pivots. It started as a gamer?s social network that transitioned into making communities for mobile games. Now it focuses on maximizing lifetime revenue from players for developers.

It launched a product last year, that implemented an HTML5 layer inside games so developers could automatically swap in and out promotions based on a player?s history or demographics. A ?whale? that spends a lot would be shown different adverts than a player who advances in a game without spending anything.

That helped the company rack up 4,000 developers on its platform, close an $8 million round of funding in November and grow to about 60 employees. Yim had advised the company through this evolution.

?I?ve known the CEO Andy Yang personally and watched the development of the company,? said Yim. ?They?ve identified product-market fit, they?re ready to scale and I?ve to come help them out.?

PlayHaven?s business has two prongs ? an in-app advertising network that reaches about 100 million monthly uniques and a platform of revenue maximization tools. Those tools segment out users based on their spending habits, and help developers understand which ads or promotions to show them.

?If you look at the tools in this industry today, it reflects the maturity of this ecosystem,? he said. ?We no longer just slapping ads on top of games without much thought about what?s the best point in the game to show an ad, who are the appropriate users to show an ad to or not show an ad to.?

They face dozens of competitors that overlap slightly (though not totally) with their mission. Big service providers like Flurry and Tapjoy help developers acquire users, but they?re not necessarily primarily focused on maximizing engagement or retention. Chartboost is another competitor that recently raised $19 million from Sequoia Capital.

Yim also has a venture partner role at e.ventures, which is a global fund that rebranded from the name BV Capital earlier this year. e.ventures is an investor in PlayHaven and Yim says his operational role is his full-time job.

?You could call my venture partner role a hobby,? he said. ?Since they?re an investor in the company, there?s no conflict of interest from this perspective.?

PlayHaven is a Lifetime Value (LTV) Maximization Platform that enables mobile game creators to completely control and balance their in-game marketing and monetization needs. Embrace the flexibility of the web with PlayHaven?s HTML5-powered platform to modify, analyze, and optimize the game experience in real-time to meet business goals. Since May of 2010, PlayHaven has served thousands of game developers and publishers including PocketGems, Glu, Game Circus, Fluik, Halfbrick, and several others. Learn more at playhaven.com.

Dodgers TV Deal: L.A. Club Inks $7 Billion Time Warner Pact, MLB To Determine Revenue-Sharing Impact

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers formally announced a deal with Time Warner Cable on Monday to create a new TV channel that people familiar with the situation say assures the team more than $7 billion over 25 years. That is double what Major League Baseball thought the local TV rights were worth when the team was sold out of bankruptcy just last year.

The gap will be the subject of discussions going forward as the league attempts to haggle over how much of that extra money will go into a revenue-sharing pool to help out baseball's lower-revenue franchises.

MLB calculates that 34 percent of a team's local revenue, after subtracting costs, is available for redistribution throughout the league. When the Dodgers were mired in bankruptcy last year, the league agreed to value the potential TV rights of any future deal at $84 million the first year, rising 4 percent every year thereafter. Over 25 years, that estimated TV rights revenue of $3.5 billion.

The actual TV rights contract represents a huge mark-up from that initial forecast. It could be a boon to the league, depending on how much of that revenue its internal rules committee says is subject to sharing. The contract is also a big win for the owners, including Guggenheim Partners and Magic Johnson, who bought the team out of bankruptcy last year for $2 billion from Frank McCourt.

The broad strokes of the deal terms were confirmed by three people who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about them publicly.

MLB spokesman Pat Courtney wouldn't comment on the deal, but said the league would need to approve it. "We are still awaiting further information," he said.

If approved, fans in the Los Angeles area and Hawaii would have to switch from watching Dodgers games on Fox Sports' regional sports channel Prime Ticket after the 2013 season.

The high price tag also means monthly TV bills are likely headed upward ? in the Los Angeles market and elsewhere.

"There's no question that there's a huge problem with sports rights," said Derek Baine, a senior analyst with research firm SNL Kagan, adding that one big question is "when is this going to stop?" Baine also blamed higher TV bills on the proliferation of new channels and rising fees for once-free TV station broadcasts.

Time Warner Cable Inc., which agreed to pay the fees, is now aiming to cut deals with other local TV distributors to offset the cost, which could spread any fee hikes across the TV landscape, including in other markets.

The new channel, SportsNet LA, will be launched and operated by a subsidiary of the team formed in December called American Media Productions LLC.

Along with selling the channel to other TV distributors, Time Warner Cable will have the exclusive advertising rights and certain branding and programming rights. It will also offer production and technical services outside of regular game coverage, which will be handled by the team's subsidiary.

Ownership of the network was important, according to the people familiar with the situation, because the league allows teams to reduce their revenue-sharing contributions by the cost of running their own TV networks.

The contract marks the second major sports rights deal in three years for Time Warner Cable, which bought the rights to Los Angeles Lakers games in 2011 and launched regional sports networks covering them last year.

After paying an estimated $3 billion for the Lakers rights for 20 years, Time Warner Cable eked out higher fees from other TV distributors in Los Angeles, including DirecTV. The cable operator has said it is bidding for long-term sports carriage agreements to give itself certainty about rising sports costs.

"This deal, like our Lakers' deal, furthers our efforts to attain greater certainty and control over local and regional sports programming costs," David Rone, president of Time Warner Cable Sports, said in a statement.

However, Time Warner Cable is not the only network operator looking to recoup the cost of sports rights by hiking fees on other TV distributors.

The New York Yankees' YES Network, which is part owned by News Corp.'s Fox network, is also expected to seek a fee hike from Time Warner Cable when that agreement expires early next year.

Dodgers owner Mark Walter said in a statement, "we concluded last year that the best way to give our fans what they want ? more content and more Dodger baseball ? was to launch our own network."

Oil steady ahead of the release of US indicators

(AP) ? Oil prices were nearly flat Wednesday as a recent rally cooled off ahead of the release of more U.S. economic indicators and the conclusion of a meeting of Federal Reserve policymakers.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 1 cent to $97.56 a barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.13, or 1.2 percent, to close at $97.57 on Tuesday after being pushed higher by a report about rising U.S. home prices. Energy prices can rise when investors feel good about the economy, since it's needed to power manufacturing and other economic activity.

But traders became slightly more cautious ahead of the release of other U.S. economic indicators, including economic growth on Wednesday and weekly jobless claims Thursday. In addition, the Federal Reserve will conclude a two-day meeting later Wednesday with the release of a statement that investors will study for clues about the outlook for the economy and interest rates.

Recent rises in oil prices have been the result of an improving global economy, and positive manufacturing reports from the U.S. and China. But significant gains could be capped by demand constraints and ample supply, analysts said.

"The fundamentals are also likely to deteriorate again later in the year," said analysts at Capital Economics in a report. "Over the longer term, booming energy supply from both conventional and new sources will also add to the downward pressure on prices."

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 1 cents to $114.37 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1 cent to $2.966 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 3.4 cents to $3.292 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil rose 0.6 cent to $3.104 a gallon.

Record crowd at March for Life in Washington : News Headlines ...

CWN - January 28, 2013

A record crowd called for legal protection for the unborn during the annual March for Life in Washington. The Associated Press reported that ?thousands? took part, while pro-life journalists who were present estimated the crowd at 500,000.

?One day, we will be here and triumph, because love and truth always triumph,? former Sen. Rick Santorum told the crowd.

The march was preceded by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops? annual National Prayer Vigil for Life at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. An estimated 13,000 were in attendance.

?There is no doubt that the next major assault on the Gospel of Life will come from those pushing physician assisted suicide and euthanasia,? Cardinal Se?n O?Malley preached. ?The society that allows parents to kill their children will allow children to kill their parents.?

Report: States force jobless to pay needless fees

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Jobless Americans are paying millions in unnecessary fees to collect unemployment benefits because of state policies encouraging them to get the money through bank-issued payment cards, according to a new report from a consumer group.

People are using the fee-heavy cards instead of getting their payments deposited directly to their bank accounts. That's because states issue bank cards automatically, require complicated paperwork or phone calls to set up direct deposit and fail to explain the card fees, according to a report issued Tuesday by the National Consumer Law Center, a nonprofit group that seeks to protect low-income Americans from unfair financial-services products. An early copy of the report was obtained by The Associated Press.

Until the past decade, states distributed unemployment compensation by mailing out paper checks. Some also allowed direct deposit. The system worked well for people who had bank accounts and could deposit the check without paying a fee.

It also cost states millions of dollars each year to print and mail the checks.

Banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co., U.S. Bancorp and Bank of America Corp. seized on government payments as a business opportunity. They pitched card programs to states as a win-win: States would save millions in overhead costs because the cards would be issued for free. And people without bank accounts would avoid the big fees charged by storefront check cashers.

However, most of the people being hit with fees already have bank accounts. The bank-state partnerships effectively shifted the cost of distributing payments from governments to individuals. The money needed to cover those costs is deducted from people's unemployment benefits in the form of fees.

Consumer advocates like NCLC are focused on ensuring access to the direct-deposit option so that people can avoid the card fees.

The trouble, the new report says, is that many states make it difficult for people to sign up for direct deposit. The rate of people using direct deposit ranges from a national high of 82 percent in Minnesota to a low of 16 percent in Arizona, the report says.

Minnesota offers direct deposit to people when they apply for benefits, and allows them to change their payment method online or over the phone, the report says.

In Arizona, by contrast, people are automatically enrolled in the card program. After they receive the card, they must find a paper form, fill it out, and submit it by mail. There is no way to change payment methods online or over the phone.

"The difference in direct-deposit rates among states seems primarily due to how hard or easy the state makes it for workers to choose direct deposit," the report says.

In five states ? California, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland and Nevada ? unemployed people aren't offered direct deposit at all. The report says that setup is illegal under a federal law that bars states from requiring benefits recipients to open an account at a particular bank.

The federal government recommended in 2009 that people with bank accounts receive payments via direct deposit. Nearly four years later, the report says, "there is no excuse for any state not to be offering direct deposit as the first choice for payment of unemployment benefits."

Banks make more money when more people use the cards. In the past, some of their deals with states prevented states from offering direct deposit, or required states to promote the card program as a first option.

To cover the cost of issuing cards and running the programs, banks charge a plethora of fees, including charges for balance inquiries, phone calls to customer support, leaving an account inactive for a period of months, or making a purchase using a personal identification number.

Many states have eliminated some fees and improved consumer protections in the two years since NCLC published its first comprehensive review of state unemployment payments. Banks no longer charge overdraft fees, which skimmed up to $20 from the benefits of card users whose spending exceeded the balance on the card.

Pennsylvania was singled out for praise in the report. Residents of that state will save $5.2 million in card fees each year because the state switched to a lower-fee card.

In part because of the recent improvements, the report says, prepaid cards often are the best option for people who don't have bank accounts. Those people would often pay even bigger fees to storefront check cashing services.

"A well-designed prepaid card is safer, cheaper and more convenient than paying to cash a paper check," said Lauren Saunders, one of the report's authors, in a prepared statement. But she said "it is no substitute for direct deposit to an account of your own choosing."

Zynga's shares rise 14 percent ahead of earnings report next week

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc's stock rose 14 percent on Monday as investors grew more confident that the social games developer behind "FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars" will deliver a solid set of quarterly results next week.

Its shares ended trading at $2.84, up 35 cents

Zynga reports quarterly results next Monday. In October, it raised the lower end of its 2012 earnings forecast and also announced a $200 million share buyback plan and a new partnership with British company bwin.party to offer online real-money gambling.

Last month, it put in a preliminary application to run real-money gambling games in Nevada.

Analysts said there was no news that caused the spike

Arvind Bhatia, an analyst at Sterne Agee, said, "Outside of Apple, it feels a little bit like we're in a little bit of bull market in tech. A lot tech memes are up even without any news. This one was perhaps underowned and maybe that's why people are saying in 2013 that's one they want to own.

"Volume is three times the normal volume and stock is up 13 percent and that's clearly telling you somebody's buying."

"They scheduled an earnings call for next Tuesday and haven't preannounced, so perhaps investors are feeling good about the quarter," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

The "FarmVille" creator has struggled to hold on to users for once-popular titles it publishes on Facebook, and is shifting focus to capture growth in mobile games.

Zynga is hoping that a lucrative real-money market could make up for declining revenue from games like "FarmVille" and other fading titles that still generate the bulk of its sales.

Last year, the games publisher carried out 11 of the planned shutdowns of 13 underperforming game titles, including simulation games like "Petville" and "FishVille."

As part of an on-going cost-cutting plan, Zynga laid off 5 percent of its full-time workforce and shut its Boston office last year and said it might consider closing its Japanese and British game studios.

"A lot of it is going to depend on Zynga's cost-cutting and there's are still a lot of issues as they don't have the advantages from their previous relationship with Facebook," said Sterne Agee analyst Bhatia.

Coltart on new board - The Standard

MINISTER of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture David Coltart has thrown his weight behind the new Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board membership.

Report by Brian Nkiwane

Coltart said with the assistance of the Sports and Recreation Commission, they had taken time to come up with the final list of board members which they had mandated to revive boxing.

Boxing made headlines during the era of the late legend Proud ?Kilimanjaro? Chinembiri but later fizzled out.

?As the powers behind this, we are sure that we did a good job. We looked at the experience the person has in the sport. We then came up with a board composed of former boxers, promoters, a medical doctor and a media practitioner. We want people who are going to revive this sport,? Coltart said.

The new board members are set to receive letters of appointment next week.

The state of boxing in the country has been in dire straits with no substantive board for over a decade.

Last week, boxer Tinei Maridzo was quoted in the press urging the minister to appoint the board for the revival of the sport.

List of board members:
Paul Nenjarama (Chairman)
Lorraine Muringi
Frederick Farai Muchena
Edgar Peter Jack Hammond
Tsitsi Muzuva
Alexander Kwangwari
Gilbert Munetsi
Rangarirai Charles Dzimba

Genes behind aggressive endometrial cancer

Jan. 28, 2013 ? In a major breakthrough for uterine serous carcinoma (USC) -- a chemo-resistant, aggressive form of endometrial cancer, Yale researchers have defined the genetic landscape of USC tumors, findings that point to new treatment opportunities.

The collaborative team -- which included researchers with expertise in gynecological cancer, genomics, and computational biology -- identified a number of new genes that are frequently mutated in USC. The results of this comprehensive genetic analysis of USC are published in the Jan. 28 Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) online early edition. The researchers were supported as part of a collaborative program with Gilead Sciences, Inc.

Endometrial cancer is the most prevalent gynecologic tumor in women, with over 47,000 newly diagnosed cases and about 8,000 deaths in 2012 in the United States alone. Patients with type I endometrial cancer tumors generally have a good outcome, but those with type II, or USC, have more relapses and deaths, and the disease is more aggressive.

"We have clearly identified the mutations that are responsible for USC tumors," said senior author of the study Dr. Alessandro Santin, professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine, and program leader of the gynecological cancers research program at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and a member of Yale Cancer Center. "In addition to a number of well-known cancer genes, we found three genes that had not previously been associated with cancer that are found in these tumors. This finding points to new pathways that could be important in developing therapies down the road."

The team collected tumors from 57 women affected with USC to try to determine the molecular basis of the tumor's aggressive behavior. They sequenced all the genes from the tumors and identified mutations that are crucial for these tumors to grow. The team also studied the copy number variations -- genes that are not mutated but are amplified in the tumors to give them a growth advantage over normal tissues.

The newly-identified cancer-related genes included two -- CHD4 and MBD3 -- that are found in the same protein complex and play a role in remodeling the genome to allow certain regions to be turned on and off. The discovery of a third gene, TAF1, was a surprise to researchers because it is a core component of the machinery responsible for transcribing a large fraction of the protein coding genes in the human genome.

"The detailed study of different cancers continues to produce new and unexpected discoveries," said corresponding author Dr. Richard P. Lifton, Sterling Professor, chair of genetics at Yale, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. "These new findings define the biological basis of this cancer, and suggest new opportunities for personalized therapy."

Other authors on the study include first author Siming Zhao, Murim Choi, John D. Overton, Stefania Bellone, Dana M. Roque, Emiliano Cocco, Federica Guzzo, Diana P. Schwartz, Thomas J. Rutherford, Amy L. Stiegler, Shrikant Mane, Titus J. Boggon, and Joseph Schlessinger.

In addition to Gilead, the study was funded in part by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Gaming's most secret secrets | GamesRadar

Shadow Of Death - 2 hours, 23 minutes ago

Didn't know most of these, but I had done the "Mega Man X: Hadouken!" one multiple times. It's a lot easier than the rough guide in this article suggests actually. Once you've gotten all those upgrades, you just have to repeat the section past the checkpoint you're respawned at. Not too hard, you just have to kill the enemies before they can hit you I've used that special blast (I can't remember what it's actually called), to insta-kill bosses and the like..HOWEVER, you need full health (energy) to execute the attack. Anything less than that and it won't work. Another slightly odd bit to the game. If I remember correctly, if you got the save code after getting the super blaster attack, if you entered it you'd end up at the start of the level where you'd get said superblaster, but you'd already have it. Something like that, anyway. Just FYI, but I REALLY liked Megaman X back in the day, though I never got the sequels (I played X-2 and really liked it, but never got it myself).

01.28.13 ? Is FFLGuard part of your Risk Management portfolio ...

Village Pawn & Gun Shop: We are so grateful to FFLGuard for helping us to reach a reasonable settlement agreement with ATF in lieu of revocation. We came in "hot" and?FFLGuard was very helpful in guiding us as to our options, as well as in hammering out a reasonable deal with ATF. We highly recommend that other FFLs join?FFLGuard before they become a "hot" case. We cant wait to work with?FFLGuard from this point forward so that we are in compliance well beyond that of ATF requirements. Thank you Chris Chiafullo, Scott Braum, and James Zammillo for handing this matter with the expertise that we needed! Jennifer Baggett from Village Pawn & Gun Shop in Wadesboro, NC Ph: 704-694-6266

North Georgia Traders: Equipped with a vast legal knowledge and a no nonsense approach, Chris Chiafullo and his FFLGuard team have been an irreplaceable asset in our legal battle against the ATF. They offer a professional service with a personal touch. If you?re looking for results as an FFL dealing with ATF, look no farther than FFLGuard. Erica Turner from North Georgia Traders in Cleveland, GA (706) 878-7998)

Open Range Sports: I've been with FFLGuard for years.? They are the best advocate I could find, to protect MY business and MY FFL, at an affordable rate.? I was curious when a firearms manufacturer's trade association announced it was offering a 'visitation for fee' service to examine retail FFL's compliance with ATF policy.? Unfortunately, a manufacturer's trade association does not represent nor speak solely for retail FFL's, no matter how they attempt to spin it. They have competing and conflicting interests with questionable influence from manufacturers.? FFLGuard has no conflicting interests.? They are pure, unadulterated advocates for a retail FFL like mine, with the both the power and knowledge to protect me and my business." Barry Laws, Owner of Open Range Sports Crestwood, KY (502) 243-8282

Far West Gun & Supply: [During our last ATF inspection, we] actually got a totally clean bill of health - no violations at all. [ATF] found a couple of small items that we were able to correct on the spot and everybody was happy. [Our FFLGuard Professional, Jimmy Skinner, and I] had several long nights getting things in order, and thanks to Jimmy's guidance, we were able to pull it off! YIPPIEE YAHOO! ...I want to give my personal thanks to Mr. Skinner for all his very professional help. Without his guidance I don't think we would have fared as well as we did. Of course, when the inspectors see the FFLGuard decal right under the open sign, I believe that really does change their attitude as they walk in the door. One of the inspectors asked me: "Just what does FFLGuard do for you?" I told them that it gives me a degree of confidence that I would not have if I was alone. Just knowing that you guys are watching my back is very comforting. Thank you for being there!! Jerry Payne, Owner of Far West Gun & Supply, Santa Barbara, CA (805) 569-2922

Red?s Trading Post: Our gun shop, Red?s Trading Post, was in business for 105 years before we got into hot water with ATF.? Without FFLGuard, I don?t think our situation would have ever been adequately resolved and I surely would have lost my FFL. There are two options when it comes to dealing with an FFL revocation: "The Big Fight" or FFLGuard.? We originally chose "The Big Fight" because FFLGuard was not available at the time, so I have seen both options first hand and whole-heartedly recommend FFLGuard. To those who think they can take on the ATF with "The Big Fight," I ask: Do you have at least 3 1/2 years to devote to this fight? (Ours lasted that long.) Do you have over $200,000 to fight this? (We paid just that much BEFORE we got to court.) Do you have almost no clerical errors whatsoever? (Many dealers think that their errors are ?minor? and that the Judge will be on their side, which couldn?t be farther from the truth.) IF you do prevail in court, what is to prevent you from not going through this again? My goal is to make sure that no one goes through what we have been through, which is why I am adamant about others participating in FFLGuard.? Because of the lawyers at FFLGuard, we?ll be in business at least another 105 years and beyond. Ryan Horsley, Owner of Red?s Trading Post Twin Falls, ID (208) 733-3546

Jerry's Outdoor Sports: Before I started to participate in FFLGuard, I was in business for over 25 years.? I had been inspected a few times, but I had never had any major problems with ATF or otherwise.? In fact, I thought we had a fairly decent relationship with ATF, and since I was a ?good guy? who always tried to cooperate with them whenever I could, I figured that I had nothing to worry about.? Boy, was I wrong.? On one visit a few years ago, ATF went through EVERYTHING, including things that had already been inspected in the past.? I got violated for old items, new items, items that had been reviewed and not violated before, and on and on.? I couldn't believe it.? By the end of the inspection, I felt like a criminal in my own store.? I even got written up for selling two Glocks to the local Sheriff's Department on letterhead and with a purchase order!? ATF argued it was a straw purchase since I sold the guns to the quartermaster even though I knew the guns were for the department and not her! When ATF decided to come down on me, I was devastated.? I only wish I had hired FFLGuard before then so my whole livelihood wouldn't have been at risk.? At every step of the process, ATF tried to steamroll me, and frankly, they did a pretty good job.? If it would have been up to me to defend myself, I would have been out of business and bankrupt.? Counsel at FFLGuard, however, stood with me every step of the way and defended me both as a FFL and as a person.? When ATF pushed, FFLGuard pushed back, but it was about more than just fighting.? What I really wanted was a peaceful solution that would allow me to work with ATF going forward, stay in business, and most importantly, be a model of compliance so I will never have to worry about these types of problems again.? FFLGuard accomplished all of that and more, and I will forever be grateful to them for that. Jerry Stehman, Owner of Jerry's Outdoor Sports Grand Junction, CO (970) 245-1502

Belleville Indoor Shooting Range: FFLGuard has provided our store with top-notch legal services.?? They?ve represented us in the courtroom and in our dealings with ATF and we can say first-hand they are trustworthy and talented.? We?ve achieved peace of mind of through our implementation of FFLGuard?s Law Plus Guidelines at our store and are catching potential violations that might have gone unnoticed before.? Because of our success with internal controls, we have opted to open another store which has been a success!? We are proud to participate in FFLGuard and highly recommend it. Steven King, Owner of Belleville Indoor Shooting Range Belleville, IL (618) 234-9690

El Cajon Gun Exchange: FFLGuard created an easy, understandable system that informs and educates management and provides the very necessary foundation for proper store policy. In a nutshell, when a dealer fully embraces FFLGuard, they very quickly become a difficult target for an aggressive ATF inspector.? FFLGuard provides legal representation, good advice, and easy access to both of those things.? FFLGuard does exactly what the name says it does.? I would sooner get caught with my fly down in public than to take the FFLGuard sticker off the door. Ron Godwin, Manager & VP of El Cajon Gun Exchange El Cajon, CA (619) 579-5152

Shadow Valley Arms Co.: Our experience has been excellent concerning the FFLGuard program. We have grown to 4 locations, and we were almost overwhelmed with the basics of our business. We felt that ATF requirements were not getting the proper attention they deserved. We were able to implement FFLGuard?s Law Plus Guidelines to organize our systems, and after about a 6-8 week implementation and training period, we felt like we were finally on top of things.? We have since been through 4 ATF compliance inspections, and our violations are down significantly. A giant relief? as only a gun shop owner can know and understand. I highly recommend FFLGuard, as their responsiveness and insight is second to none. David Vogel, CEO of Shadow Valley Arms Co. Ogden, UT (801) 510-5972

Top Gun: FFLGuard has been an invaluable resource for helping us correct the issues we had and avoiding others in the future.? While we had always done our best to operate in compliance with the regulations, it is often hard to find answers and to sort out all of the conflicting information that is out there. Thus, we knew we had issues to get straightened out, but we were unsure how to go about doing it.? FFLGuard accomplished this goal for us.? At our most recent inspection by ATF, they commented how they could tell almost to the day when we started implementing the FFLGuard "Law Plus" Guidelines, and we would have had many violations had we not done so.? Not surprisingly, the inspection went great, ATF praised our efforts, and we owe much of our success in this regard to FFLGuard and its responsive and knowledgeable lawyers. Julie Thompson, Owner of Top Gun Houston, TX (713) 779-4867

Mega Sports: I find being an FFLGuard client to be a huge benefit to my business. The FFLGuard "E-Blasts" alone are worth their weight in gold, as they constantly clarify and reinforce the need to stay on top of all important nuances of BATF regulations. I feel that having an experienced team of dedicated lawyers from FFLGuard behind me -- a team that's always there when I need them -- only helps protect my business. Mark Daniels, Owner of Mega Sports Plainfield, IL (815) 577-2100

Dunkelberger?s Sports Outfitter: We have been in business for 37 years, and always felt that we did things the ?right? way.? To our surprise, we got caught in the middle of Mayor Bloomberg?s controversial effort to prosecute out-of-state gun dealers.? After a costly exercise to defend our good name in that matter, I realized that FFLGuard could seriously help my operation remain current, compliant, and ?off the radar? of those looking to put me out of business. Since I have brought in FFLGuard to assist us, we have implemented their ?Law Plus? Guidelines, had them in to train our staff, and relied on them for counsel.? Although I wish I knew of them before my Bloomberg experience, I am certainly happy to have them in my corner now and in the future.? Anyone who even sells 100 guns or more each year ought to give serious consideration to bringing these guys on board.? I?m glad we did. Jere Dunkelberger, Owner of Dunkelberger?s Sports Outfitter Stroudsburg, PA (570) 421-7950

Second Amendment Sports : FFLGuard helped us look at our record-keeping from a different perspective.? We always wanted to be compliant, but now we truly focus on perfection.? It is a different paradigm, yet appropriate for what we do.? Without our FFL, we would be out of business, no question!? And we do not see the ATF relaxing their standards, so through FFLGuard we?ve adjusted ours to be beyond their expectations. Matt Janes, Owner of Second Amendment Sports Tucson, AZ (520) 325-3346 Bakersfield, CA (661) 323-4512

Guns ?N Gear: My husband may be ?the gun guy? who knows the ins and outs of our operation, but with FFLGuard there to help us, it certainly helps me sleep at night. Patrice Gapen, Co-Owner of Guns ?N Gear Cheyenne, WY (307) 632-4867

Whittaker?s Guns: We were skeptical in hiring attorneys who were not only from out-of-town but from out-of-state.? As it turns out, it was the best thing we ever did.? The FFLGuard lawyers are ?wired in? with the right people everywhere, so just knowing them made our lives much, much easier.? Granted, their tips and pointers and accessibility put our minds at ease, but the old saying ?it?s not what you know, it?s who you know? couldn?t be more true than with the boys at FFLGuard. Darrel Whittaker, Owner of Whittaker?s Guns Owensboro, KY (270) 229-0140

Kimble?s Gun & Repair: For a small business, FFLGuard is an excellent way to retain legal counsel who are experts in the firearms field.? As a small business owner, I could not afford to pay the full hourly rate of a local lawyer, let alone the hourly rate of an expert in this field.? By becoming an FFLGuard client, my annual fee is pooled with the other members so that together we can afford legal representation and have the peace of mind knowing that our lawyers know the rules and regulations that apply to us Federal Firearms Licensees.? This puts me on equal footing with BATF, and not at their mercy. Perry Kimble, Owner of Kimble?s Gun & Repair Linton, ND (701) 254-5502

Hulmes Sporting Goods: I have had bad experiences with some ATF inspectors who were very intimidating. In the past, I have worried daily about ATF inspections which has actually haunted me! However, with FFLGuard?s help and reassurance, I feel better and more comfortable about dealing with ATF. I'm not going to say that I am totally at ease, but I feel so much better knowing when inspection day comes I will have FFLGuard in my corner. People may say that this sounds crazy but it sure is not: FFLGuard has given me peace of mind. Kim Veglio, Co-Owner of Hulmes Sporting Goods Paris, TN (731) 642-0561 or (731) 642-6400

Mark?s Outdoors: After 29 years in the retail gun business, and being the top retailer in the U.S.A. for many of the top seller gun brands, the single most important decision I have made over that time was to hire FFLGuard to watch my back.? At one time, our store was used as a ?model store? for ATF training since we were told that we ?did such a good job that new [ATF] agents were brought to us for basic training? and we were also used in the NSSF?s ?Don?t Lie for the Other Guy? video, AND used on local television as a model of what a gun store should be. Then D-day came, when my ?model? status apparently meant nothing. ATF traced the buying habits of one of our customers, and everything spun out of control for us.? They said our paperwork was incorrect going back 29 years!? Literally years and years of my blood and sweat were on the line, as they were ready, willing and able to pull my license, ?model store? or not.? Have you ever gone back 29 years to clean up paperwork?? We did.? The team at FFLGuard is the real deal! They talk with the folks at ATF religiously, and as a result, we now get the correct answer every time. I pride myself on a quality job we now do based on the standard that FFLGuard helped me establish.? Now our daily sales and record keeping is easy and done right.? You will be surprised just what this FFLGuard crew can do for you.? For the first time in 29 years I can?t wait for the next ATF audit, because they won?t be in my store long.? I?m ready everyday.? I guarantee you will be happy with FFLGuard. Mark Whitlock, owner Mark?s Outdoors Birmingham, AL (205) 822-2010

David Codrea: "If you have an FFL?or have a friend who does?you owe it to yourself or them to find out more about FFLGuard. And no, I have no interest in FFLGuard other than a respect for the work of founder Chris Chiafullo and what he and his colleagues are trying to do, because I have friends in the business who have gone through hell for running afoul of technicalities.? Coming from an audit compliance background, I understand how vitally important it is to establish appropriate protocols."
