DIY! Say those three letters quickly and it invokes images of fun domestic projects to brighten our homes and make our lives more wonderful, but the truth is a little different.
Houses on the Sunshine Coast are among those around Australia plagued by one of the hazards of the Do-It-Yourself craze: unfinished projects.
One Kawana resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, admitted to no fewer than six incomplete jobs around the house.
"How many unfinished? Well, rendering, painting, ensuite, toilet, other toilet, flooring - he laid most of it but it's not finished - we got a new entry door, needs to be stained, but it's in now," the wife and mother said.
Thankfully, in her family's case, progress has not stalled altogether. "Tomorrow, he will bulk out the entry around the door."
Research by Masters Home Improvement has revealed that about 80% of Australians started a DIY project in the past 12 months, but 53% of those remain unfinished.
The research revealed garden jobs topped the list of unfinished projects, followed by painting and incomplete bathroom and kitchen makeovers.
Stephen Bardell, of Buderim Handyman Hardware, said DIY could be a bonding experience for families, but preparation was key. "It can be a good thing for the family - especially if you have young boys."
STEPHEN'S DIY TIPS

- Work out a budget
- Don't over-estimate your skills
