Study highlights link between domestic violence and mental health ...

According to recent research from the University of King's College in London, both men and women with mental health disorder are more likely to have experienced domestic violence when compared with the general population. The prevalence of domestic violence was reportedly seen across a range of mental health conditions.

The study specifically found that women with depressive disorders were about two-and-a-half times more likely to have experienced domestic violence when compared to women without mental health disorders. Women with anxiety disorders were reportedly at even greater risk. Those with obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and common mental disorders were also more likely to have experienced domestic violence.

Researchers concluded not only that people with mental health problems are more likely to experience domestic violence, but also that domestic violence can often lead to victims developing mental health problems.

Those conclusions are in line with other studies suggesting a link between domestic violence and mental health. The exact relationship between the two has not been determined, however, and more research needs to be done.

Domestic violence is not a simple thing to understand, on a number of levels. While it may be easy to conclude that domestic violence always results from a simple situation of aggressor-victim, this isn't always the case. Relationships can be complicated, and police investigations don't always uncover all the information needed to fully understand domestic situations.

Not, of course, that violence is ever justified. It isn't. But it isn't important to realize that domestic violence is sometimes based in a story that is more complicated than criminal charges may suggest. And, when it comes to criminal defense, the devil is in the details.
