Demand for Coffee Soars | Convenience Store Decisions

Sales of coffee dominate sales of hot beverages, making up 83.3% of the total hot beverage market in the U.S. Coffee consumption is expected to increase through 2015 at an average annual rate of 2.7%, while tea consumption is expected to increase through 2015 at an average annual rate of 3.1%, according to the National Coffee Association?s (NCA) National Coffee Drinking Study.

Positive expectations for continued growth in coffee sales, despite its ?mature? product position in the market, are due to the innovations in premium coffee products. Despite the economic woes, 37% of total coffee consumed was classified as ?gourmet,? NCA reported. This suggests consumers were set on drinking good coffee even in the face of an uncertain economy.

NCA also noted an increase in the average price of coffee by 25% since 2007, owing largely to operators having to pass on commodity price increases to consumers. This trend has eased after peaking in early 2011.

Finding Your Niche
With c-stores putting much focus on the coffee category, consumers stop to buy coffee at c-stores more than they fill up their cars. For chains like Rutter?s Farm Stores in York, Pa., the appeal for coffee goes beyond the consistency of the beverage itself. It is the customization.

?We?re in an era of options,? Weiner said. ?People want to personalize everything. I find it in food and certainly in coffee and fountain drinks. Everybody is making things the way they want it, and they become very particular about it. It becomes their beverage or their sandwich, salad or whatever they?re consuming.?
Rutter?s sells seven different coffees, available 24 hours a day. Most condiments, which include milks, creamers, whipped cream, and caramel and chocolate syrups, are merchandised in a self-service cold well.

Aside from satisfying demands, condiments help convenience stores compete more effectively with the likes of Starbucks, Dunkin? Donuts and other coffeehouses by leveling the playing field on niche flavors.

Most c-stores have embraced the consumer?s desire for customization by offering broad coffee and condiment selections and stations for customers to prep their cups the way they like. C-stores are improving coffee quality in line with greater demand for gourmet varieties and taking great strides to use filtered water to ensure flavor consistency from store to store. Some operators push the coffee envelope further by promoting higher-caffeinated brews and functional ingredient additives.

Profile of today?s Coffee Customer

According to the latest National Coffee Drinking Study from the National Coffee Association (NCA), 40% of 18-24 year olds are drinking coffee each day?this is a sharp rise from the 31% of this age group who said they enjoyed a daily dose of java during 2011. This increase brought consumption of coffee among this age group back to its 2009 level.
?? ?
? In the same National Coffee Drinking Study, 54% of adults age 25-39 reported drinking coffee each day, another significant increase from the 44% who reported drinking coffee daily during 2011.

? Why the strong increase is less clear: 29% of the 18-39 age group said they felt better about their financial situation (only 12% of those over 40 felt similarly positive), but no other group shared the same focus on finances. Overall, 46% of coffee drinkers characterized their financial situation as ?the same? when compared to 2011.

? The study also found that over 75% of U.S. adults drink coffee, and 58% reported drinking coffee daily.

? Coffee drinkers still outnumber tea drinkers in the U.S.: 183 million coffee drinkers to 173.5 million tea drinkers. In 2012, combined sales of coffee and tea at restaurants and drinking places is estimated to total $18.7 billion, according to David Sprinkle, publisher of Packaged Facts. He also noted strong increases in demand for specialty coffee drinks (cappuccinos, lattes, Americanos and Macchiatos), with Macchiatos surging in popularity (as measured by market penetration) by 50% since 2007.

Rest easy, Spain: Your money's safe in a mattress safe

With a debt crisis still stalking Europe, a Spanish entrepreneur has a new idea to protect your euros: a mattress with a safe inside.

Europeans have tossed and turned at night since the continent's sovereign debt crisis began three years ago. Right now it?s the Cypriots, surprised earlier this month by an announcement that some personal bank accounts could be taxed in order to raise the needed contribution for a bailout.

But Greeks, Irish, and Spaniards know the drill all too well themselves. Spanish bank deposits, for instance, dropped by 4.7 percent between June and July 2012, as faith in the country?s banking system plummeted.

In banks, it?s safe to say, many Europeans do not trust.

So what better way to slip soundly into sleep each night than knowing the precise status of one?s life savings? That?s the idea behind the simple and inventive Caja MiColch?n, or My Mattress Safe, a bed manufactured in northwestern Spain that is?outfitted with a safety deposit box.?

Francisco ?Paco? Santos worked in the mattress business for 14 years before losing his job in 2009. Unemployed, he tapped a dormant entrepreneurial spirit, designing this mattress that stands out from the rest.

My Mattress Safe was released by Mr. Santos' company Descanso Santos Sue?os (DESS) three weeks ago, in step with the Cyprus banking saga. It sells for about $1,120.?

Set to upbeat, jazzy music, one promotional video on the company?s website shows the ins and outs of production. The mattress is made with ?the best materials? and implanted at the foot of the bed is a digital-entry safety box (there's no mention of whether or not it?s fireproof).

In the video, Mr. Santos parodies a bank commercial, calling My Mattress Safe a ?financial institution? with a new, imaginative take on saving. Not to fear, he says ? this approach to savings doesn?t come with the threat of bankruptcy, mergers, or market fluctuations.

That could be a powerful selling point, with the safety of bank deposits high on the mind in Europe once again this month. According to The Christian Science Monitor, the European Union ?raised serious doubts about its promise to guarantee citizens? savings ? a vital pillar of any financial sector that underpins savers? trust ? when it went along with a plan to levy small Cypriot depositors.?

DESS hasn?t released sales figures, but the company said they?ve exceeded expectations. And despite the initial double take, there may be a larger audience for a Mattress Safe than one might expect.

In Argentina, for example, many keep their US dollars (a popular currency because of high rates of inflation) out of Argentine banks after ?harsh lessons? learned from past economic crises. The Monitor met one Argentine last summer who keeps his dollars in a safety deposit box.

?I know that the dollars in my box are actually there,? says Francisco, an IT worker in Buenos Aires.??If you have a bank account in dollars your money doesn?t exist ? it?s just virtual money."

The My Mattress Safe tagline feeds into this mentality: ?Your money, very close to you.?

For customers looking for assurance that their money isn't going anywhere with the Caja MiColch?n, there?s a calculator on the website where customers can work out their savings over time. Enter the deposit amount, the number of months of planned investment, and voila:?The same number of euros deposited in a My Mattress Safe is at the investor?s disposal a month, year, or decade later. (?What you deposit is what you have. So easy, so simple,? reads the website.)

"History repeats itself,? Santos told Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

?Older generations thought the safest place to keep their money was under the mattress. Now we?re proposing the same thing as we've seen people's uneasiness about the current situation. I'm not going to deny that the idea is a little crazy, but we believe that people with this mattress not only will sleep well, but also will be more relaxed because their savings are safe."

Pakistan's former president Musharraf hit by shoe by protestor

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? An angry lawyer threw a shoe at former President Pervez Musharraf as he headed to court in southern Pakistan on Friday to face legal charges following his return to the country after four years in self-imposed exile, police said.

Meanwhile, a Taliban suicide bomber on a bicycle attacked the convoy of a paramilitary police commander in northwestern Pakistan, killing 11 people, including a four month-old infant, police said.

Musharraf, who seized power in a military coup in 1999 but was forced to step down nearly a decade later, is disliked by many lawyers throughout Pakistan because of his decision to suspend the chief justice of the Supreme Court while he was in office.

The lawyer tossed his shoe at Musharraf as the former military strongman was walking down a hallway in the court building in the city of Karachi surrounded by a mob of security, supporters and journalists, said police official Nasir Aftab.

The shoe did not hit Musharraf, and the lawyer was not detained because no charges were filed against him, said Aftab.

Throwing a shoe at someone is an especially potent insult in Muslim countries because the sole is considered unclean.

Local TV channels showed video of the incident, but it was impossible to identify the shoe thrower because he was hidden behind part of the corridor.

Following the incident, judges granted Musharraf an extension of pre-emptive bail in three cases against him, meaning he cannot be immediately arrested.

Two of the cases involve the 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and the killing of Akbar Bugti, a Baluch nationalist leader who died in August 2006 after a standoff with the Pakistani military. Musharraf was granted an extension of 21 days in those two cases.

He was granted a 15-day extension in connection with a third case, in which he is accused of illegally removing a number of judges at the time, including the Supreme Court chief justice, said Shahadat Awan, the prosecutor general for surrounding Sindh province.

Musharraf was also restricted from leaving the country during the period that his bail was extended, Pakistani state TV reported.

Musharraf returned from exile last Sunday, seeking a possible political comeback despite the legal charges against him and death threats from Taliban militants. But he was only met by a couple thousand reporters when his flight from Dubai landed in Karachi, and analysts have said they don't expect his party to attract much support in parliamentary elections scheduled for May 11.

Musharraf seized power in 1999 when he was serving as Pakistan's army chief. He was forced to step down in 2008 and eventually left the country amid discontent with his rule and threats of impeachment by the country's main political parties. His decision to suspend the Supreme Court chief justice, Iftikhar Chaudhry, played a key role in reducing his popularity. Chaudhry has since been reinstated.

In Karachi, a group of lawyers protested outside the Sindh High Court on Friday as Musharraf entered. They chanted slogans against the former military strongman and jostled with his supporters.

The attack on the paramilitary police commander's convoy in northwestern Pakistan occurred in the city of Peshawar. The apparent target, Abdul Majeed Marwat, who heads the Frontier Constabulary, was not hurt, said police official Dost Mohammed Khan.

The 11 dead included five members of the security forces and six civilians, said Khan. The civilians included two women, a young girl and a four month-old infant. Another 22 people were wounded, said Khan.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, told The Associated Press that they carried out the bombing because the paramilitary police "are part of a system we don't recognize, and second, they are operating against us."

Peshawar is located on the border with Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region, the main sanctuary for Taliban militants in the country. The Pakistani Taliban have carried out many bombings in the city and other parts of the country targeting both security forces and civilians.

There is concern that the militants could step up the pace of attacks ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Self Improvement Information That's Important To Know | Float'n Above

TIP! It?s often said that listening is no less important than speaking when it comes to effective communication. Listening definitely holds true for developing yourself.

Many people would like to improve their life. For some, the shows itself in their personal life whereas with others, they prefer to concentrate on improving their professional careers. This article has some suggestions for people who want to enhance their self improvement.

TIP! Go out of your way to give other people compliments. Doing the opposite and taking the initiative to be kind to others helps you to be kind to yourself too.

Humility is a key factor in personal development. If you understand that there is a lot you can learn and that you have room to grow, you can gain proper perspective. Once you understand this concept, your natural desire to learn and grow will kick in, inspiring you to improve who you are.

TIP! Make sure you are constantly seeking new ventures. These challenges can open new doors and develop better character and personality.

You should stay in great physical condition in order to get the best out of self improvement. Basic self-care, such as sleeping at least eight hours, exercising every day, and eating lots of fruits and vegetables are important parts of achieving positive growth. This sounds like obvious advice, but it?s sometimes hard to put into practice.

TIP! Having a good attitude will empower your growth as an individual. A negative attitude won?t help you advance in life and may actually lead you down the wrong path.

Quit worrying so much. When you worry, you create a made-up situation inside of your mind that hasn?t yet happened, and in all likelihood, probably never will. Instead of worrying endlessly about what might happen, start preparing for those scenarios. You will then be prepared and able to move forward.

TIP! Try to make the most of your time at work and get more done. Some say there is a trick that involves taking frequent breaks throughout the work day.

When you are pursuing your personal development goals, having setbacks can be discouraging and make you feel like a failure. Failure is just a learning experience incognito. Failure can teach you a great deal about what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Every thing you fail at, you should be proud of, it is just another part of you!

TIP! You must know what you want out of your life in order to develop personally. Goal setting is a vital part in having a positive outlook on your life.

A good personal development plan has a physical health component. In order to maintain a healthy body, you have to stay motivated to practice healthy eating habits and exercise. Good health is necessary for you to be able to focus on other things.

TIP! Find personal development books that are appropriate for your age and situation. A good personal development book can give you great advice and ideas that can change your life.

Put your core principles into practice. Every person?s identity rests on a set of beliefs that are vital to them. When you consistently practice these, you will gain confidence and believe in yourself. Doing this will help you develop consistency, which is a good trait to have.

TIP! Come up with a little pep talk for yourself. Make a list of all the good things about you, and put it on a postcard.

A good leader should be humble as well as powerful. A leader guides people in the right direction but understands how to serve their employee?s needs. A good leader has morals and is honest; these are crucial characteristics for any successful person to hold.

TIP! A good character trait is being humble. Everyone is fairly insignificant compared to the size of the universe.

Keep a journal with you so whenever ideas hit, you can record them. Carry paper and a pen around with you. Write down your thoughts in detail, and be sure to put it into action.

TIP! When working on a project, work with your own skills and abilities. Celebrate your own diversity and remember that although you may not be able to do certain things as well as you?d like, there are things you can do that others can?t do nearly as well.

Unfortunately, stress is quite a killjoy to a person?s state of happiness and joy. Stress causes both physical and mental damage that increases in severity the longer we experience it. To be able to think clearly, it is important to eliminate stress. Set a time each day to relax, to clear your mind, and be alone. A calm, refreshed mind is essential to inner peace and self-assurance.

TIP! Everyone should strive to be the best that they can be. Follow your passions if you want to be truly great.

If you avoid making decisions, then you are denying yourself opportunities. Do not fear the decision making task. Educate yourself, if necessary, to make the best decisions possible. Making decisions helps build your instincts of right and wrong. Even mistaken decisions are valuable because they provide instructive learning experiences. If you make a wrong move, you will know next time to do something different.

TIP! If you suffer from anxiety, try going to see a movie with a friend. This is a good way to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

If you notice that you are consistently failing to meet your goals and live up to expectations, you should attempt to diagnose the probable causes. Find out how others have succeeded at the same thing. You may realize you have been unrealistic, not having given yourself the means necessary to achieve your goal, or that perhaps you have set too high a mark.

TIP! Try and surround yourself with people who think like you do. When you do this, you surround yourself with people who will motivate you as opposed to bringing you down.

Avoid the temptation to comfort yourself with a shopping spree. Shopping to make yourself feel better will only result in high bills, more stress and excess possessions that clutter your home and your life.

TIP! When most potential employers look at your education history, they look at the degree that you earned, not the school that you attended. Some exceptions to this include, large financial institutions.

Often, people find themselves wanting to improve one or more areas in their lives, but they lack the know-how to get themselves started. This article has some great advice to get you launched into the journey, but you still have a lot of hard work to do. If you need another motivational push down the road, then just pull out this article and you will find some new enthusiasm to push on.

D-Link ships its AC1200 802.11ac WiFi router / thermos doppelganger

DLink ships its AC1200 dualband 80211n router coffee mug impersonator

True, D-Link's AC1200 may better resemble the container keeping your coffee hot at work than a traditional WiFi router, but it remains a rare take on networking design that's frankly appreciated. We're glad to report, then, that it's shipping to stores. The device (seen in the middle) is the more affordable of D-Link's two 2013-era 802.11ac routers at its $130 street price, keeping costs in check by peaking at at more modest 867Mbps speed with the new standard and 300Mbps on old-fashioned 802.11n. It still dishes out wireless on either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands, offers wired connections to four gigabit Ethernet devices and shares content from drives attached to its lone USB 3.0 port. When devices like the HTC One and Galaxy S 4 are arriving with 802.11ac built-in, we'd say the AC1200 is a timely solution -- just don't pack it with your office lunch.

New DNA test identifies ingredients in foods

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Almost all foodstuffs contain the genetic material of those animal and plant species that were used in their preparation. Scientists at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Genetic Security Research and Consulting at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have developed a novel screening procedure that provides for highly sensitive, quantifiable analysis of animal, plant, and microbial substances present in foodstuffs. For this, the researchers have adapted the latest techniques of DNA sequencing, which are otherwise currently employed in human genetics to unravel the genetic information of thousands of patients.

"The innovative aspect in comparison with conventional DNA detection methods such as polymerase chain reaction, or PCR for short, is that by means of bioinformatic analysis of all biological DNA data available worldwide we can identify the presence of material from species that we would not otherwise expect. And, using a simple digital method of counting short snippets of DNA, we will also probably be able to determine the relative incidence of individual species-related material more precisely than was previously the case," explained molecular geneticist Professor Dr. Thomas Hankeln, who developed the method in collaboration with bioinformaticist Professor Bertil Schmidt, Ph.D. and colleagues at the German and Swiss food control authorities.

In pilot studies, the researchers were able to use the new DNA method to detect the presence of a 1% content of horse meat in products and to determine the actual amount with a high level of precision. The Mainz researchers even found slight traces of the DNA of added mustard, lupin, and soy in a test sausage prepared for calibration purposes, something that could also be of interest with regard to allergy testing of foods.

Because of its potential, the method -- dubbed 'All-Food-Seq' by its developers -- has already attracted the attention of food inspection experts. "This method is very interesting in connection with efforts to promote the molecular traceability of food," said Hermann Broll of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin and Dr. Ren? K?ppel of the Zurich Cantonal Laboratory in Switzerland. The method developed by the Mainz scientists is thus to be validated in comparison with conventional detection techniques in the near future.

Glass-blowers at a nano scale

Mar. 25, 2013 ? EPFL researchers are using the electrical properties of a scanning electron microscope to change the size of glass capillary tubes -- Their method has already been patented as it could pave the way to many novel applications.

Have you ever thrown into the fire -- even if you shouldn't have -- an empty packet of crisps? The outcome is striking: the plastic shrivels and bends into itself, until it turns into a small crumpled and blackened ball. This phenomenon is explained by the tendency of materials to pick up their original features in the presence of the right stimulus. Hence, this usually happens when heating materials that were originally shaped at high temperatures and cooled afterwards.

EPFL researchers realized that this phenomenon occurred to ultrathin quartz tubes (capillary tubes) under the beam of a scanning electron microscope. "This is not the original microscope's purpose. The temperature increase is explained by an accumulation of electrons in the glass. Electrons accumulate because glass is a non-conductive material." explains Lorentz Steinbock, researcher at the Laboratory of Nanoscale Biology and co-author of a paper on this subject published in Nano Letters.

As the glass shrinks, it can be seen live on the microscope screen. "It's like a glass-blower. Thanks to the possibilities provided by the new microscope at EPFL's Center of Micronanotechnology (MIC), the operator can adjust the microscope's voltage and electric field strength while observing the tube's reaction. Thus, the person operating the microscope can very precisely control the shape he wants to give to the glass," says Aleksandra Radenovic, tenure-track assistant professor in charge of the laboratory.

At the end of this process, the capillary tube's ends are perfectly controllable in diameter, ranging from 200 nanometers to fully closed. The scientists tested their slimmed down tubes in an experiment aiming to detect DNA segments in a sample. The test sample was moved from one container to another on a microfluidic chip. Whenever a molecule crossed the "channel" connecting the containers, the variation of the ion current was measured. As expected, the EPFL team obtained more accurate results with a tube reduced to the size of 11 nm than with standard market models. "By using a capillary tube costing only a few cents, in five minutes we are able to make a device that can replace "nano-channels" sold for hundreds of dollars!" explains Aleksandra Radenovic.

These nano-fillers have a potential beyond laboratory usage. "We can imagine industrial applications in ultra-high precision printers, as well as opportunities in surgery, where micro-pipettes of this type could be used at a cell's scale," says the researcher.

For the time being, the method for manufacturing nano-capillary tubes is manual, the transition to an industrial scale will take some time. However, the researchers have been able to demonstrate the concept behind their discovery and have registered a patent. Therefore, the road is already paved.

WASHINGTON A George Washington University researcher recently received a grant to study ways to cut human tissue more efficiently, an effort that could minimize the need for blood transfusions and other products for patients during surgery.

Surgery comes with its own set of hazards but the introduction of outside blood or blood products can put a patient at even greater risk. Michael Keidar, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at George Washington University, has been awarded a $445,000, five-year grant by U.S. Patent Innovations Inc. to develop technology that would limit such introductions by making plasma cutters and coagulators more effective.

Plasma cutters work by sending a pressurized gas, such as argon through a small channel. Through the channel, a negatively charged electrode is emitted and a spark is generated. As the gas passes through the channel, the spark heats the gas until it turns to plasma. This reaction creates a stream of directed plasma, which can be used to create precise incisions in medical patients and tissue.

Plasma, not to be confused with blood plasma which is the liquid component of blood and normally holds blood cells, is one of the four fundamental states of matter, along with solid, liquid and gas. Like gas, plasma does not have a defined shape or volume however unlike gas, it can be manipulated for use as beams or lasers.

Dr. Keidar's research will explore the range and parameters of plasma in several, currently used devices and investigate the effects of adjusting such variables as the flow rate and voltage to plasma, monitoring tissue reaction to those changes and identifying if the modifications are valuable to the commercial marketplace.

"Our main objective is to understand the basic physics of the plasma phenomena as well as plasma interaction with living tissue" said Dr. Keidar. "We will use existing devices and apply a variety of plasma diagnostics as well tissue temperature measurements to study physics. I expect that this research will lead to new devices and new applications."

Stocks finish lower as Cyprus euphoria fades?

Stocks bounced off their worst levels but still ended in negative territory Monday, as initial euphoria over Cyprus fizzled and even after Eurogroup head's Jeroen Dijsselbloem backtracked on his previous comments that the island nation's bailout is a template for bank rescues.

Stocks slumped near session lows shortly after the open after Dijsselbloem said the Cyprus rescue represented a new template for resolving euro zone banking problems and that other countries may have to restructure their banks. But the spokeswoman for Dijsselbloem backtracked on the comments.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished lower, dragged by Bank of America and 3M. Earlier in the session, the blue-chip index briefly hit a fresh intraday high for the ninth time. The index still remains on track for its best first-quarter percentage gain since 1998.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also closed in negative territory. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, rallied above 14.

(Read More:Why the S&P 500 Just Can't Break its Record High)

All key S&P sectors were in the red, led by industrials and materials.

(Read More: Where's the Long Awaited Market Correction?)

"Investors need to keep an eye on Cyprus, but the situation is nowhere near the magnitude of the Greece crisis in the Fall of 2011," wrote Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab. "With the S&P 500 up sharply in 2013 there are risks; however, the risks are substantially lower this time and that means traders should consider a correction or any pullbacks to be a buying opportunity."

The euro fell below $1.29 against the U.S. dollar, briefly tumbling to its lowest level since mid-November.

"This is evidence of a bigger problem: the lack of coherent leadership in the EU," said Brian Battle, director at Performance Trust Capital Partners. "They're proscribing austerity and pain rather than competitiveness and growth."

Meanwhile, a Central Bank source told Reuters that most Cyprus banks would remain shut until Thursday, reversing an earlier decision which said most banks would reopen on Tuesday after a week-long shutdown. Earlier, the Central Bank had announced most banks would open on Tuesday, with the exception of Popular Bank and Bank of Cyprus, the island's two largest lenders which would reopen on Thursday.

Cyprus and its international lenders reached a deal merely hours before a deadline to resolve the island nation's financial crisis and avert the country's exit from the euro zone. The 10 billion euro ($13 billion) deal involves the winding down of Cyprus' second largest lender, the Popular Bank of Cyprus, and imposes a levy on uninsured deposits over 100,000 euros ($130,000) in Cypriot banks.

(Read More: Cyprus Relief: Why the Rally May Be Short Lived)

"Despite a deal being struck for Cyprus, it will set an unsettling precedent for future bailouts and investors will once again be concerned over the security of their bank deposits," wrote Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at stockbroker Interactive Investor. "Furthermore, investors should question why the regulators allowed the Cypriot banking system to rise to this size, given the experiences in Iceland and Ireland."

Among earnings, Dollar General rose after the discount retailer posted earnings that beat expectations and said this year's sales growth could top the strength it saw in 2012.

Apollo Group surged to lead the S&P 500 gainers after the for-profit education company posted a better-than-expected profit and reaffirmed its full-year forecast.

Elsewhere, shares of Dell jumped after the company confirmed it had received competing offers from Blackstone Group and billionaire investors Carl Icahn as the computer giant looks to go private. The offers come as the company agreed to a $24.4 billion deal to be taken private by private equity firm Silver Lake.

Facebook declined, falling to its lowest level this year, after U.S regulators approved a plan to compensate market makers who lost money in the social-media giant's IPO on the Nasdaq last May.

Apple traded higher after the tech giant acquired WiFiSlam, a startup company that makes mapping applications for smartphones.

Also among techs, BlackBerry extended sharp losses from last week after the smartphone maker's new BlackBerry Z10 launch failed to generate buzz. In addition, Goldman Sachs cut its rating on the company to "neutral" from "buy."

Vodafone rallied amid a U.K.'s Sunday Times report that said telecommunications company was looking to sell its 45 percent stake in its U.S. Verizon Wireless unit.

Meanwhile, New York Fed President William Dudley said the Federal reserve must remain very accommodative because the labor market remains "far from healthy" despite some recent overall economic improvement.

Apple Acquires WiFiSLAM for its Indoor Location-Tracking Tech

apple Maps

And here you thought it was tricky enough to get the correct directions to your driving destination via the GPS-friendly app on your iPhone.

Apple's allegedly upping the ante in the world of location services by acquiring a company that could help give it more of a foothold in the relatively unexplored world of indoor mapping.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal' Jessica Lessin, Apple recently acquired WiFiSLAM for approximately $20 million. The company specializes in a technology that allows mobile apps to pinpoint users' locations through the interaction between their smartphones and standard Wi-Fi signals ? no GPS need apply.

According to MacRumors, Apple has confirmed the acquisition, but has offered no additional details as to what it plans to do going forward and/or how WiFiSLAM technology might be integrated into Apple's product offerings.

However, the acquisition opens up the possibility that Apple could start making more headway in an area that rival Google has already start tinkering around in. According to one of Google's support pages, Google already has more than 10,000 different floor plans available for locations across 13 different countries ? the company uses a mix of Wi-Fi hotspot triangulation and normal cell tower-based location estimations to let users know exactly where they are in these Maps-friendly locations.

Although WiFiSLAM doesn't actually have a website of its own ? at least, not since the company was acquired and the site was pulled offline ? the company's listing on the website AngelList indicates that WiFiSLAM can deliver an accuracy of 2.5 meters "using only ambient WiFi signals that are already present in buildings."

Some are already considering Apple's move another "late to the game" attempt to catch up to Google's success in mapping, which brings to mind the Apple Maps debacle that occurred shortly following the company's introduction of its "Google Maps killer" in September of 2012. The company's first attempt to deliver a mapping and location service sans Google's involvement was met with immense criticism, and ultimately resulted in an apology from Apple CEO Tim Cook himself.

Of course, Apple Maps has gotten a bit better since its introduction ? or at least, that's what PCMag.com columnist John Dvorak believes, based on his recent experience in a three-car, three-mapping-service road rally against fellow tech pundits.

Find Your Favorite Clothing And Costumes At An Online Music Store

Being a musician or dancer not only requires the appropriate talent to impress an audience, it requires the necessary look to win people over. It's not enough just to act the part, it is important to look the part as well.

It is very awkward listening to a great performance while thinking why is she wearing that outfit? There is something unusual about watching a heavy metal singer in a football jersey, or a hip hop artist in a suit and tie, or a classical musician wearing a leather coat and chains. All of this affect performances in a negative manner.

It is often not the fault of the performer. A person can't wear the proper clothes or costume if he or she does not know what to wear. Musicians and dancers have spent years searching for outfits only to return home empty handed after a day of travelling to several distant locations.

Now with the invention of the internet, there is a solution to those who require help. An online music store provides thousands of choices regarding clothing and costumes for artists. A simple online search will save many hours of offline travelling, dollars spent if you get very lucky and do find what you're looking for, and the frustration of having to go through the annoying process of endless searches for what you require.

Halloween, holiday, movie, mascot, couples, adult, kid, baby, and jazz costumes are of the many costumes that are available with accessories that include wigs, makeup, masks, mustaches, beards, glasses, and a lot more.

Dancewear includes tap, ballet, gymnastics, modern, classic, and jazz costumes. Other items include bottoms, leotards, shoes, tights, tops, tutus, skirts, unitards, and shoes.

Hip Hop apparel includes jewelry, bracelets, earrings, pendants, watches, rings, necklaces, grillz, sunglasses, wallet chains, belt buckles, cuff links, tees, hats, tags, bags, and much more.

Many categories of clothing and costumes are available including items from many of the world's top brands and designers. Delivery is always fast and directly to your favorite location. Discounts, bargains, coupons, contests, free stuff, and a lot more bonuses are included.

You can also check out many of the other categories at an online music store such as musical instruments, DJ and karaoke, drum beats and loops, music lessons, songwriting and composing, dance, sheet music, music books, music magazines, recordings of music, music for children, music for health, internet and satellite radio, games, iPods and iPhones, television and movies, posters and art, memorabilia, tickets, cool stuff, musicians directory, concert calendar, employment and internship, and much more.

Searching and finding what you need has become easier than ever before. Now all that you require is a computer and the internet, not a car, gas money, bus ride, travelling on foot, nagging at someone to take you, or bike ride to out of the way locations that will charge you too much money. Musicians and dancers are going to look better than ever!

Senate Passes Democratic Budget

WASHINGTON ? An exhausted Senate gave pre-dawn approval Saturday to a Democratic $3.7 trillion budget for next year that embraces nearly $1 trillion in tax increases over the coming decade but shelters domestic programs targeted for cuts by House Republicans.

While their victory was by a razor-thin 50-49 vote, it allowed Democrats to tout their priorities. Yet it doesn't resolve the deep differences the two parties have over deficits and the size of government.

Joining all Republicans voting no were four Democrats who face re-election next year in potentially difficult races: Sens. Max Baucus of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., did not vote.

White House spokesman Jay Carney praised the Senate plan, saying in a statement it "will create jobs and cut the deficit in a balanced way."

While calling on both sides to find common ground, Carney did not hold out much hope for compromise with Republicans. The rival budget passed by the GOP-led House cuts social programs too deeply, he said, and fails "to ask for a single dime of deficit reduction from closing tax loopholes for the wealthy and well-connected."

The Senate vote came after lawmakers labored through the night on scores of symbolic amendments, ranging from voicing support for letting states collect taxes on Internet sales to expressing opposition to requiring photo IDs for voters.

Final approval came at around 5 a.m. EDT, capping an extraordinary 20 hours of votes and debate. As the night wore on, virtually all senators remained in the chamber, a rarity during a normal business day. But at that hour, most had nowhere else to go.

The Senate's budget would shrink annual federal shortfalls over the next decade to nearly $400 billion, raise unspecified taxes by $975 billion and cull modest savings from domestic programs.

In contrast, a rival budget approved by the GOP-run House balances the budget within 10 years without boosting taxes.

That blueprint_ by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., his party's vice presidential candidate last year ? claims $4 trillion more in savings over the period than Senate Democrats by digging deeply into Medicaid, food stamps and other safety net programs for the needy. It would also transform the Medicare health care program for seniors into a voucher-like system for future recipients.

"We have presented very different visions for how our country should work and who it should work for," said Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray, D-Wash.

The long debate got testy at times.

As the clock ticked past 1 a.m., Murray asked senators to show respect for colleagues "who may not be able to stand as long as us, or who are elderly." Sen. David Vitter, R-La., shot back that Republicans were not trying to delay anything, and wondered what flights or other appointments would be missed if senators voted until 7 a.m.

The loudest acclaim came toward the end, when senators rose as one to cheer a handful of Senate pages ? high school students ? for their work in the chamber since the morning's opening gavel. Senators then left town for a two-week spring recess.

Congressional budgets are planning documents that leave actual changes in revenues and spending for later legislation, and this was the first the Democratic-run Senate has approved in four years. That lapse is testament to the political and mathematical contortions needed to write fiscal plans in an era of record-breaking deficits, and to the parties' profoundly conflicting views.

Republicans said the Democratic budget wasn't much of an accomplishment. "The only good news is that the fiscal path the Democrats laid out...won't become law," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

"I believe we're in denial about the financial condition of our country," Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, top Republican on the Budget panel, said of Democratic efforts to boost spending on some programs. "Trust me, we've got to have some spending reductions."

Though budget shortfalls have shown signs of easing slightly and temporarily, there is no easy path for the two parties to find compromise ? which the first months of 2013 have amply illustrated.

Already this year, Congress has raised taxes on the rich after narrowly averting tax boosts on virtually everyone else, tolerated $85 billion in automatic spending cuts, temporarily sidestepped a federal default and prevented a potential government shutdown.

By sometime this summer, the government's borrowing limit will have to be extended again ? or a default will be at risk ? and it is unclear what Republicans may demand for providing needed votes. It is also uncertain how the two parties will resolve the differences between their two budgets, something many believe simply won't happen.

Both sides have expressed a desire to reduce federal deficits. But President Barack Obama is demanding a combination of tax increases and spending cuts to do so, while GOP leaders say they won't consider higher revenues but want serious reductions in Medicare and other benefit programs that have rocketed deficits skyward.

Obama plans to release his own 2014 budget next month, an unveiling that will be studied for whether it signals a willingness to engage Republicans in negotiations or play political hardball.

The amendments senators considered during their long day of debate were all nonbinding, but some delivered potent political messages.

They voted in favor of giving states more powers to collect sales taxes on online purchases their citizens make from out-of-state Internet companies, and to endorse the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that is to pump oil from Canada to Texas refineries.

They also voiced support for eliminating the $2,500 annual cap on flexible spending account contributions imposed by Obama's health care overhaul and for charging regular postal rates for mailings by political parties, which currently qualify for the lower prices paid by nonprofits.

In a rebuke to one of the Senate's most conservative members, they overwhelmingly rejected a proposal by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., to cut even deeper than the House GOP budget and eliminate deficits in just five years.

The Democratic budget's $975 billion in new taxes would be matched by an equal amount of spending reductions coming chiefly from health programs, defense and reduced interest payments as deficits get smaller than previously anticipated.

This year's projected deficit of nearly $900 billion would fall to around $700 billion next year and bottom out near $400 billion in 2016 before trending upward again.

Shoehorned into the package is $100 billion for public works projects and other programs aimed at creating jobs.

Rove: ?I could? imagine next GOP nominee supporting gay marriage

Rove (ABC News)

Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff under President George W. Bush and current Fox News contributor, says he can envision the 2016 Republican presidential nominee supporting gay marriage.

?I could,? Rove said during a roundtable discussion on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday when asked if he could imagine a same-sex marriage supporter on the top of the GOP's next ticket.

The comment from Rove, one of the party's former top strategists, comes about a week after Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman said in an editorial that he now supports gay marriage, and as the GOP looks to regroup?and rebrand?following its loss in November.

As ABC noted, Portman?who in 2012 was one of several vice presidential candidates considered by Mitt Romney?is the only sitting Republican senator to publicly support same-sex marriage.

Rove also said the GOP must focus on outreach to Latino voters.

"We need to take our spokesmen, like Susana Martinez and Brian Sandoval, governors of New Mexico and Nevada and Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, and get them out there along with the rest of the party, communicating around the country," Rove said. "It's amazing to me?in Texas, a Republican naturally campaigns everywhere in Texas, including Latino communities, African-American communities, Anglo communities, rural, urban. But in other states that's just not normal. We need to make it normal."

Of the GOP's somewhat pubic post-election brainstorming, Rove said, "I think this is a constructive process. And I see a lot coming out of it."

Before his appearance on the air, Rove fielded some lighthearted questions from online users during a Web interview, including one about his thoughts on his former boss' paintings.

?I have one. I have one of the original, first forty-threes," Rove said. "[President Bush] painted my wife and our dogs. And he?s pretty good. Particularly, I called him when [first dog] Barney died, and he?d painted a picture of Barney which I thought was really, you know, clearly from the heart.?
