Dansville family escapes fire; community coming to aid
February 21, 2013 by Ben Beagle
A Dansville woman is rallying support for the North Dansville family who lost their Cemetery Road home in an early morning fire on Thursday.
Bethany Nichols VanLare is organizing a collection for Lori and Tom VanDurme and their five children who were able to escape from their burning home thanks to working smoke detectors.
?Lori and Tom have both been such a help to our town and our community and now it is our turn to return the favor during their time of need,? VanLare said in a post to the Facebook page of The Livingston County News.
In an interview, VanLare said the VanDurme?s helped build the Dansville Community Center ? Mr. VanDurme is a home improvement contractor ? and have provided a home for foster children for many years.
VanLare has been in contact with the family and is hoping to gather clothing, food, gift cards and other essentials to help the family get back on their feet.
In the first couple of hours VanLare said she had heard from a number of people wanting to help. Some people plan to drop off donations and VanLare said she will help make arrangements to pick up items. VanLare may be reached via call or text to (585) 315-8206.
?They?ve always been one of the first to step up and help others in need,? she said of the VanDurmes. ?And now they?ve lost everything.?
Eight area fire departments responded to the fire, which was reported at 1:42 a.m., according to a report from the Livingston County Sheriff?s Department.
When sheriff?s patrols and the Dansville Fire Department arrived at the single-family residence, the home was fully engulfed in flames.
The homeowners and five children were able to exit the home without injury. Sheriff?s Dept. Sgt. Matthew Bean credited the home?s working smoke detectors for helping the family get out.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing, but it is believed to have started at an outside furnace/boiler and spread to the residence, the sheriff?s department said.
Responding to the scene were the Livingston County Fire Coordinators Office, Dansville EMS and Fire Department, West Sparta Fire Department, Sparta Fire Department, Springwater Fire Department, Perkinsville Fire Department, Wayland Fire Department, Canaserega Fire Department and the South Dansville Fire Department.
Investigating and assisting at the fire scene were Sgt. Matthew Bean, Inv. Daniel Rittenhouse, Deputy Chad VanAuken and Deputy Brandan Flickner.
